My name is Ann Thompson. I am an author and a poet, I have written about my experience in two Catholic Church Orphanages. I am hoping to raise funds to publish a second book about my experience in the Orphanages. I want to raise awareness and help New Zealanders who have suffered a similar experience.
This book is written through the eyes of a child, telling her story, who’s memories are as vivid today, as though they were yesterday. I was not educated, but the child in me does not go a day without the pain, shame and torment of the abuse, which she was put through, by the very people who should have looked after her. I thought all my life that I was a bad child and that the punishment was done to me for being bad and a bold girl. A child who could not do anything unless she was punished beforehand.

I have written this book because I believe those of us who have been abused by the nuns and priests need to tell our stories so the abuse of children will never happen again.

Canada to pay millions in suit over forced adoptions

For decades, Canadian social workers forcibly separated indigenous children from their families, putting them up for adoption by nonnative families in Canada and around the world.

On Friday, the Canadian government took a step to make amends for that adoption program, which began in the 1960s and lasted until the 1980s, by agreeing to pay 750 million Canadian dollars in legal settlements.

According to reports the Pope was inside the Vatican, the heart of the Roman Catholic Church.  Alarming footage from the scene yesterday showed black smoke pouring into the sky at a considerable rate.
A large explosion was heard just before plumes of the thick smoke erupted into the sunny skies above Rome. Hoardes of firefighters were seen at the auto-garage where the fire started.

Anne Biggs was banished by Catholic Church to US at the age of four

Anne Biggs has used her real-life story, of being banished to the U.S. by the Irish Church, as the basis of her novel, "The Swan Garden".
Anne Biggs’ mother was only fourteen when she was raped, sent to a home and forced to sign documents for her daughter’s release. Biggs, who was born in County Westmeath in 1949, was sent to St Patrick’s Home in Dublin, which secretly exported 254 Irish children to the U.S. for adoption from the 1940s to the 70s. Forced adoptions: Catholic Church sorry for wrecked lives

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, above, head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales has apologised for its part in the ‘hurt’ caused to young unmarried women who were pressured into handing over their babies for adoption in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Nichols acknowledged the “the grief and pain caused by the giving up of a child through adoption”, adding: Sadly for unmarried mothers, adoption was considered to be in the best interests of the mother and child because of the associated stigma and the lack of support for lone parents.

The catholic church stole babies in New Zealand as well, I am one of those babies. I was forced from my mother's arms, after she gave birth to me, it took St. Vincent De. Paul, two and a half month to get me away from my mother. This happened in a catholic nursing home for unwed mothers, in Wellington New Zealand.
 How many more babies were stolen, I do not know. It is kept very quite over here, not a word is spoken about child abuse, nor child sex abuse. It is like, we are still ghost in New Zealand, to only be seen, and not heard. Well, not even seen any more, that way, there is no facing the evils and torment, which us children went through.

Australia branded ‘child-stealing capital of the Western world’

Australian children are removed from their families more often than anywhere in the Western world, nearly twice as often as in the US and almost three times the rate in New Zealand, a parlia­mentary inquiry into child welfare has heard.

There is also “a culture of ­removal and a culture of victim blaming”.
Mary Moore, convener of the volunteer Alliance for Family Preservation and Restoration, told the NSW parliamentary committee yesterday that children were being taken into care based on the opinion of case workers where no harm had occurred “but because they have concerns the child might suffer harm in the future, and they’re then in care until age 18”.

 My. book goes to the publishers next Friday... I can not wait until it is printed... I want people to know the TRUTH... about what happened to us, in the catholic church orphanage.

 I was conceived out of wedlock, because of my mother being raped at fifteen years old. I was just two and a half months old when I was taken from my mother’s arms, by the catholic church then placed in the care of one of their Catholic orphanage. From the beginning, I was taught that my mother was sinful and that I would be too unless the devil was beaten from my soul. 

I was sexual abused in the nursery from a tiny young girl of eighteen months old by three lady workers for four years. My childhood abuse in the orphanage, is New Zealand’s shameful, dirty secret of physical, mental and sexual abuse of innocent children by nuns, lay staff, the older girls and the priest and bullying at two orphanages in Christchurch New Zealand. 

From the age of five years old I was made to work on their farm and later on in their kitchen and laundries, both at Mount Magdala – St. Joseph Girls Orphanage and Nazareth House. At night times three nuns would ritual attack me by taking my clothes off, tying me to both ends of the bed and savagely attacking me with the buckle of her belt, hula hoop cut in half and a large whip as they tried to suppress my well and to break my spirit. 

They Promised Heaven is also about my fight with the catholic church to accept responsibility for the past institutionalized abuse of children and young people while in their care and to admit – unconditionally – that there was wrong doing by the two order of nuns and the priest.

It is a story which needs to be heard and to read, I have told of the horrific upbringing in two catholic orphanages. In 1997, when I watched a Prime Television documentary exposing the decades of abuse by the Good Shepherd nuns at the Christchurch orphanage, I realized then mine wasn't the only lost childhood. 

My name will not likely be familiar to most New Zealanders but my story is one that all will be shocked to read about. Whilst unbelievable that such acts of cruelty happened in New Zealand by nuns, They Promised Heaven, But Led me to Hell... also portrays my great strength of spirit and determination. I am a mother of four and I have lived in Whangarei for the past fifty years, with my husband Brian.

Inquiry into policies and practises of Adoption Act 1955

The New Zealand Adoption Act 1955 is an outdated piece of legislation that no longer reflects the needs of children requiring care outside their family. To date the New Zealand government through its Minister for Justice has consistently ignored requests and cries for it to reform this archaic legislation. There have been various parties lobbying for change, dating back to 1979; and in recent times, the request for an Inquiry to look into the way this legislation has impacted the families of those it was directed at, and how it still impacts the lives of those involved.
We, the undersigned, call upon the government of New Zealand to immediately call an Inquiry similar to that which was enacted in Australia and use this Inquiry to overhaul and reform this outdated law.

Two decades as a journalist reporting wars and disasters left me inured to suffering. Working in Whitehall under New Labour gave me a close-up view of the arrogance and cynicism of power.

Bessborough Mother and Baby Home: Order reported 80 more infant deaths to State than were on death register

With the way the nuns neglected... and abuse us children... it is a wondered... that more of us did not die... under their so called care... the nuns sold the babies to the highest bidder... and got away with it... they did... and still use money as their god... they are so evil... Ann

The religious order that ran the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home reported significantly higher numbers of infant deaths to state inspectors than it recorded privately.  An Irish Examiner investigation can reveal that between March 31, 1939, and December 5, 1944, Department of Local Government and Public Health (DLGPH) inspector Alice Litster was informed that 353 infant deaths occurred at the institution.
The figures are contained in a inspection report from 1944 obtained by this newspaper. However, the Bessborough Death Register, released under Freedom of Information, reveals the nuns recorded just 273 infant deaths in this period — a discrepancy of 80. A year-by-year comparison of the records reveals that, in all but one year, the State was told that a higher number of children were dying in Bessborough than the nuns recorded privately.

State feared public scandal over infant deaths at mother and baby homes

The State feared a “public scandal” in relation to the alarming number of children dying in mother and baby homes — 70 years before the Tuam babies scandal made worldwide headlines.  The revelation is contained in a letter sent on behalf of parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health Dr Con Ward in 1945 to the Bishop of Cork Daniel Cohalan.
The letter was in response to an angry letter sent to Dr Ward by Bishop Cohalan where he questioned the department’s request that the order remove the head of Bessborough over the “trouble” of infant mortality at the institution. Records show there was an 82% infant death rate at Bessborough at the time.
