Catholic Bishop Michael Malone was forced to choose between abuse survivors and the church, and the royal commission asked why

HE was the Catholic bishop whose term in office started in 1995 with two of the Hunter’s most notorious paedophile priests, was dominated for 16 years by “quite explosive local problems of historical abuse”, and ended with his request for early retirement, exhausted by the struggle within his own church.
In the witness box at the royal commission on Thursday, retired Maitland-Newcastle Bishop Michael Malone said he reached a point where “You either had to try to defend the church or you had to try to serve the needs of survivors, and I chose the latter”.

Germany’s Cardinal Marx faces scrutiny in sexual abuse case

Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, head of the German Bishops Conference and one of Pope Francis’ closest advisers, is criticized for negligent behavior regarding a case of sexual abuse by a priest of his former diocese from 10 years ago.
A recent legal investigation follows past inquiries regarding accusations of sexual abuse by the former parish priest involving a 15-year-old boy in the Diocese of Trier. The first accusation surfaced in 2006 but was suspended because of statutory limitations. Subsequent lawsuits were filed in 2013 and 2015 against the priest, who has been retired since 2015.

: Catholic Church and the crimes of its clergy

FOR the second time in three years, the former Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, Michael Malone, has taken the stand at a judicial commission to explain what he did when word of the paedophiles who had operated with impunity in the diocese began to assert itself in the outside world.
As he did before the NSW special commission of inquiry in 2013, Bishop Malone positioned himself as an inexperienced bishop who arrived in the Hunter just as the lid was starting to come off some horrific secrets. He said, as he has before, that he felt torn between the need to defend the church or to serve the needs of survivors, but that he eventually chose the latter.

21 things that shouldn’t be said to sexual abuse victims

As a sexual abuse survivor, I’ve heard my share of insensitive comments. I’ve also talked to enough victims to be able to gather some of the most damaging words here—all for the sake of those who truly, truly want to be loving, sensitive and helpful.
My intention in writing these is not to shame those who want to help, or make them walk on eggshells. Instead it’s to help friends and family members of victims best love and understand the sexual abuse recovery journey.
