L.A.-area bishop, father of two, resigns

From humble beginnings in southwest Mexico, Gabino Zavala entered the priesthood and embarked on a remarkable journey that landed him squarely in the corner offices of the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese.
An auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, he oversaw the church's vast San Gabriel region, a diverse community considered vital to the future of the church. Then, from his pulpit, he became a forceful champion for social and economic justice.

Bishop of Feldkirch, Austria, on Discussing Married Priests Lectionary-Based Eucharistic Prayers »

As of yet, there has been no public announcement from the Vatican revealing who has been named to the commission charged with revising Liturgiam authenticam. Only a week ago, journalist Edward Pentin reported at the National Catholic Register that the Vatican was being “tight lipped” about this commission, which was first leaked in the press by Sandro Magister in early January.
On March 8, however, a Spaniard by the name of Francisco José Fernández provided a list of members appointed to the commission on his blog La Cigüeña de la Torre. This list in turn was reproduced yesterday on the French website, Riposte Catholique (along with a considerable fund of commentary that is doubtful or erroneous).

Church's commitments cannot be reneged upon, says Archbishop Martin

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has said that the church's commitments, in relation to the compensation they owe to abuse victims, cannot be reneged upon.
Since last week's confirmation of significant quantities of human remains at a former mother and baby home in Tuam, there has been a renewed focus on the history of religious institutions across Ireland.
A report from the Comptroller and Auditor General's this week showed that 18 religious orders have paid just 13% of the €1.5bn fund for victims of institutional abuse.

Seize Church lands to pay for abuses’, says Government 2K

they should of done that long ago... and while you are at it take their blood money from their bank accounts... the children boys and girls... their money was made out of the blood of the children... who were thrashed within an inch of their lives... the slaves of the catholic church homes and orphanages worldwide... give the money back to the men and women they raped and abused for many years... this goes for the nuns as well... they got away with murder of babies and children...
I know of 3girls at nazareth house Christchurch New Zealand... who were pushed down the stairs by Sister Blandina... two girls on different days... pushed down our stairs... from the dormitory on the 2nd floor... one girl pushed down the cellar stairs for punishment... by our toilets downstairs... opposite the playroom... and we never saw them again... once the police and ambulance came and took their bodies away... us children were locked in the classroom... we watched and saw it all from the classroom windows... The Government is on a collision course with the Vatican over the funding of redress payments to sex abuse victims, saying it wants to seize lands owned by the Church.
In some of the strongest terms used against the Church by an Irish government, Taoiseach Enda Kenny warned Church authorities they must “get on with it” in terms of meeting their share of the cost of compensating victims of abuse. Mr Kenny said the Church must “measure up to the responsibilities that they accepted”.

Archdiocese of Hartford sued for alleged sexual abuse by former Guilford priest

The Archdiocese of Hartford has been sued by a former altar boy, claiming he was sexually abused by a priest who served three parishes in Greater New Haven. The Rev. Daniel McSheffery has been accused of abusing the man, now 49 years old, between 1977 and 1982 when McSheffery was pastor of St. George Roman Catholic Church in Guilford.
McSheffery was ordained in 1956 and also served at St. Mary Church in Branford, St. Augustine Church in North Branford and St. Augustine Church and its school in Hartford, according to the lawsuit filed by attorney Thomas McNamara of McNamara and Goodman in New Haven. McSheffery died in 2014, according to Maria Zone, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, who said church officials would have no other comment on pending litigation.

Ridsdale's fresh charges grow in number

More historical sex abuse charges have been laid against disgraced former Catholic priest Gerald Ridsdale. A prosecutor in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday said two new charges had been filed last week and this morning, adding to the original total of 36.
The 38th charge relates to the sexual penetration of a child under 10, the lawyer said.

Pope Francis says the Church should reflect on married priests

Pope Francis has said the Church should reflect on whether the “Holy Spirit” is demanding married priests. In an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit, the Pope was asked about the shortage of vocations in some dioceses.
He referred to the idea of “viri probati”, in which married or unmarried laymen recognised as potential leaders are ordained as priests.

Sex orgies, prostitution, porn: Allegations shake Catholic Church in Italy

ROME (RNS) — Lurid accusations of priests involved in sex orgies, porn videos and prostitution have emerged from several parishes in Italy recently, sending shock waves all the way to the Vatican and challenging the high standards Pope Francis demands of clergy.
In the southern city of Naples, for example, a priest was recently suspended from the parish of Santa Maria degli Angeli over claims he held gay orgies and used Internet sites to recruit potential partners whom he paid for sex.

Milo Yiannopoulos Calls Abuse Victims “Whinging, Selfish Brats”

A video has resurfaced of the former Breitbart senior editor attacking survivors of clerical abuse, and falsely asserting that there is a “disproportionate overlap” between gay men and paedophiles.
Following the scandal last month that engulfed Milo Yiannopolous over his remarks about sexual abuse, another video has resurfaced showing the former senior editor at Breitbart News attacking survivors of clerical abuse as “whinging, selfish brats”, and erroneously claiming that a disproportionate number of gay men are paedophiles.

Sex abuse lawsuits seek equitable relief

Two lawsuits filed in the Superior Court last week not only seek monetary damages determined during a jury trial, but a court order imposing a number of conditions on the Archdiocese of Agana and the Boy Scouts of America to prevent sexual abuse from happening.

Has Pope Francis reformed the Catholic Church?

“It will take Pope Francis five years to reform the Catholic Church.” This was the prediction of Father Hans Kung, a leading Catholic theologian, shortly after Francis’ election. On March 13, Francis will celebrate his fourth anniversary as pope. How is he doing?
Many would give him an “A” for the changes he has made in the College of Cardinals. He has appointed men for their pastoral sensitivity rather than their administrative skills. He has ignored the tradition of appointing cardinals of certain places, such as Venice and Philadelphia, and chosen men from Third World countries. Because cardinals younger than 80 will pick his successor, the longer Francis lives, the more the College of Cardinals will reflect his spirituality.

Vatican undermines abuse reform: Aust body

The Pope may be retreating from his crackdown on pedophile priests as Vatican bureaucrats do all they can to undermine reform efforts, a senior Australian Catholic official has warned.
The Catholic Church in Australia could end up as a "marginalised rump" unless there is real change to an institutional culture hell-bent on self-protection and self-preservation, Truth Justice and Healing Council CEO Francis Sullivan says.
