When Simon Burke describes his new miniseries, Devil's Playground,
as "a pretty brutal and harrowing piece of television", doesn't he run
the risk of frightening away viewers who have become sick of the subject
of crimes committed by Catholic clergy?
"That's a really good question," Burke says. "Perhaps harrowing's the wrong word. The way that we deal with the issue is in concert with a thriller, a mystery, a family drama. It's important for a society to have a dramatic telling of one of these stories, where you get a chance to live with the characters in a pretty rich way, and you get to know their lives before and after certain terrible things happen. I'm hoping it's an engrossing experience, a show where people think the characters are really complex and well drawn."
