I was never allowed to be a child. The nuns said I
had the devil in me ... Elizabeth Abernethy says her childhood was full
of beatings, humiliation and neglect at the hands of cruel and spiteful
nuns. Now,more than 40 years on,and seeking compensation for her
treatment,Elizabeth talks to MARY MURTAGH about her landmark quest for
justice.
ONE of Elizabeth's earliest childhood memories is of standing
for hours shivering in a deserted corridor with damp bedding in her arms
-her only ``crime'' having been to wet the bed.
This was punishment Poor Sisters of Nazareth-style.
Elizabeth, 55,of Toxteth, spent 12 miserable years in a Glasgow
orphanage being slapped, starved and made to feel worthless.
