The revelations about child sexual abuse at Knox Grammar School are
despicable and, sadly, unsurprising ("Private school public pain"
(February 28-March 1). Like the church, too many people in these
institutions work to protect the organisation instead of the people they
are helping or supporting.
The view of Tim Hawkes is typical of the convenient self-serving attitudes that are held by many people in these organisations. He did not report to police that a balaclava-clad person crept into a dormitory at night and groped a child in bed because he thought it was someone else's responsibility.
