Catholic Church Sex Abuse Survivors Frustrated By Pope Francis' US Visit, Lack Of Action
Pope Francis speaks to
bishops during the midday prayer service at the Cathedral of St. Matthew
on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. The pontiff addressed the Catholic
church's sex abuse scandal by saying he supported bishops' "generous
commitment to bring healing to victims" and to work to make sure "such
crimes will never be repeated."
Bernie McDaid remembers staring at the stained glass the first time his
Catholic priest molested him. He said he was about 12 years old, an
altar boy standing in the sacristy of St. James’ Church outside of
Boston, when the Rev. Joseph E. Birmingham grabbed him, started tickling
and then put his hands down McDaid’s pants.
