The
Academy Award-nominated film “Spotlight” brings viewers inside The
Boston Globe reporting team that broke the story of a widespread
cover-up of sexual abuse by Catholic priests. “The Club,” the latest
film by the Chilean director Pablo Larraín, takes a different angle. It
brings viewers deep inside the home of four priests removed from
ministry for a range of sins — or crimes.
The
tension between crime and punishment, sin and redemption, human and
divine justice drives the film, which undulates between tragedy and dark
comedy. “The Club,” opening Friday, Feb. 5, won the Silver Bear Grand
Jury Prize at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and made the longlist for this year’s Academy Award for best foreign-language film.
