Even though director Todd McCarthy's previous Adam Sandler film “The Cobbler” can be considered as dismissible, there is nothing to dismiss about “Spotlight”
-- one of the year's most noteworthy Oscar contenders and a brilliant
ensemble piece, which opened in Turkish cinemas on Jan. 29.
The story takes place only 15 years ago, on the brink of the millennium, yet still it feels like a period piece instigating a specific kind of nostalgia -- that of the yearning for a time when printed daily newspapers had not yet tanked and investigative journalism was still considered one of the most privileged and respected jobs. Today, at least in Turkey, those who dare investigate are likely to be transported to jail, i.e., Can Dündar and Erdem Gül of Turkey's oldest newspaper, Cumhuriyet.
