I am a great fan of Peter FitzSimons but I have to disagree with one
element of his article on George Pell ("Cardinal's sins means he's
finished", March 6). Fitz clearly points to celibacy among the
priesthood as being a principal cause of the attacks on children in the
church. If this was the case every person who has not had sex over a
period of years would be under suspicion. If this was the case there
should be no child abuse in the Anglican Church and in other churches
where the clergy are allowed to marry, but there is. Having said this, I
also must state my absolute disagreement with the Catholic Church's
imposition of celibacy on its clergy. It is a punitive and repressive
policy and ought to be changed.
