There can be only two possibilities in this saga: either the
self-alleged victims are telling the truth, or George Pell is telling
the truth (“Coincidental pursuit of Pell poisons atmosphere”, 29/7). The
tragedy of alleged child sexual abuse, whether it occurs in families or
in institutions, is that generally there are no third-party witnesses,
and as the royal commission has painfully revealed, the power of the
adult perpetrators combined with all-too-common cover-ups in
institutions and families, conspire to silence victims and condemn them
(without trial) to a life of shame, self-doubt and depression.
