The influence of the
Catholic Church has always been overwhelming in Ireland.
Its grip may have loosened over the past few decades, but around 90 per
cent of the country’s primary schools are Catholic, the Angelus bells
still chime out at 6pm on state TV and radio, and more than 78 per cent
of people identified as Catholic in the 2016 census.
