here was a time when Ballarat, a regional Australian city northwest of Melbourne, was proud of its most famous son. Cardinal George Pell was considered by many Catholics here to be one of the good ones, a former school captain at St. Patrick's College in Ballarat who made it from rural Australia all the way to heart of the Vatican. But as Pell rose through the ranks of the Roman Catholic Church, his hometown concealed a dark secret.
