Marist Brother John Maguire is convicted, after nine jury trials

In Sydney District Court on 25 November 2014, Marist Brother John Dennis Maguire was convicted on child-sex charges. Maguire had been charged with multiple incidents of committing an act of indecency. The victim was a student at a Catholic boys' boarding school in Sydney (St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill) in the early 1980s.
A jury spent several days hearing evidence. The jury then found Maguire guilty on six of the incidents and not guilty on two other alleged incidents. The case was heard by Judge P. Witford.

Evangelicals with gay children challenging church

Rob and Linda Robertson did what they believed was expected of them as good Christians when their son came out as gay but their actions caused a series of events that ultimately ended in their son's death.
When their 12-year-old son Ryan said he was gay, they told him they loved him, but he had to change. He entered "reparative therapy," met regularly with his pastor and immersed himself in Bible study and his church youth group. After six years, nothing changed. A despondent Ryan cut off from his parents and his faith, started taking drugs and in 2009, died of an overdose.

I was raped by priest in orphanage

A DISABLED mother-of-two has claimed she was raped by a priest and sexually abused by a female care worker when she was a young child in a Scottish orphanage. Joanne Peacher said the appalling attacks took place in the late 1970s in a Nazareth House children's home, which have been at the centre of several previous abuse scandals.
The Sisters of Nazareth, the Roman Catholic order of nuns which operated dozens of orphanages across Britain, recently apologised to children who suffered in their institutions in Northern Ireland.

Children's homes boss John Allen 'never sole supervisor'

A north Wales children's homes boss accused of sexually abusing youngsters said he was never the only person supervising boys at night.
John Allen, 73, of Needham Market, Suffolk, denies 40 counts of sexual abuse against 19 boys and one girl in the late 1960s up to the early 1990s.

Fears mother-and-baby homes inquiry will not go far enough

Initial enthusiasm from campaigners that the inquiry would be as wide ranging as possible, has been replaced by a worried scepticism, writes Conall Ó Fátharta
AS WE await the formation of the Commission to Inquire into Mother and Baby Homes, the private attitude of Government to another related scandal — the Magdalene Laundries — is instructive.

Chilean priest who helped steal babies from unwed mothers

Chilean priest who helped steal babies from unwed mothers will be moved to Spain, Catholic Church confirms
The Catholic Church in Chile confirmed that Father Gerardo Joannon ‘actively participated’ in at least two cases of illegal adoptions during the 1970s and 1980s. The priest allegedly conducted funeral masses for the stolen babies. He will be sent to Spain for a period of ‘reflection,’ said Father Alex Vigueras, who led the internal probe.

‘Serious doubt’ at McAleese report finding

New research has cast "serious doubt" on one of the key findings of the McAleese report concerning the length of time women spent in Magdalene laundries.
The research, undertaken as part of the Justice For Magdalenes Research (JFM Research) Names Project, comes as the group reiterated its call for Magdalene laundries to be included in the Mother and Baby Home Commission of Investigation.

Government ‘conscious of redress’ for Magdalene survivors

The Government was “conscious of the danger” of offering redress for Magdalene survivors just months before setting up the McAleese inquiry to investigate the issue.
The admission is made in a March 2011 Department of Justice draft memorandum for the Government, seeking permission to establish an inter-departmental committee to review a November 2010 Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) report on the Magdalene laundries.

The Poor (Mad) Sisters Of Nazareth

"Why did you say 'bum'," the woman had demanded." "I didn't," Bobbie said, "I didn't." Bobbie said she didn't even know the word. "Don't tell me lies," the woman responded. That was it. Bobbie knew she was in trouble. Innocence of a crime was no excuse in Nazareth House.
If they said you had done something, you had done it. End of story. And if they said you had not done something, especially something you were supposed to have done, and you had in fact done it, you really hadn't done it at all ... if they said you hadn't. No argument.

catholic church abuse: criminal nuns and priests [Kindle Edition]

The catholic church physically and financially abuses children and their families. Nuns beat and smother children. Priests molest children - so do nuns. Children are scarred for life -- they become adults who never realize their full potential. The church uses our donations to pay legal expenses for pedophile clergy, gets tax breaks and legal immunity worldwide while running businesses for profit and laundering money for other criminals.
The church protects themselves and these criminals -- covering up and enabling despicable acts. We have a weapon against this organization that puts themselves first - before the children and before God. We can speak out and let the world know the truth.

Catholic order denies 'culture of collusion' over abuse

Among the litany of accusations that led to the recent announcement of a royal commission into institutional child sexual abuse, none have been more shocking than those surrounding the Catholic order Saint John of God.
A former nun, who worked for the order, has spoken to 7.30 about what she says is a culture of collusion within its ranks. Most of the boys and young men placed in their care were intellectually disabled - the Brothers took a vow dedicating themselves to serving the church in the assistance of those who suffer and are in need.

Five Catholic religious orders release files on L.A. clergy abuse

Confidential personnel records from five Catholic religious orders were turned over to victims of sexual abuse Wednesday in the first wave of a court-ordered public disclosure expected to shed light on the role the groups, operating independently of the L.A. Archdiocese, played in the region’s clergy molestation scandal.
The documents pertain to a dozen priests, brothers and nuns accused of sexual misconduct in the landmark 2007 settlement with hundreds of people who filed abuse claims against the Roman Catholic Church in Los Angeles. An additional 45 religious orders will release the personnel files of their accused clergy by this fall, completing what is believed to be the fullest accounting yet of the abuse crisis anywhere in the Catholic Church.

Belfast inquiry told nuns exported 111 children like ‘baby convicts’

CHILDREN in institutions in Northern Ireland were exported to Australia like “baby convicts”, a witness has told a public inquiry into historical abuse. The Sisters of Nazareth order of Catholic nuns was responsible for the removal of 111 child migrants aged as young as five before and after World War II, some of whom faced grave sexual and physical violence after arrival. Another 20 were sent by other institutions.
In some cases parental consent was not sought, migrants were separated from siblings and some deprived of their real identities by withholding of birth certificates, a lawyer for the Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA) inquiry said.

NUN ABUSE: A Survivor's Message for the Vatican

I remembered back to this past spring. I'd just hung up the phone. It was late and the conversation with yet another clergy abuse survivor had zapped my strength and spirit as they'd recounted to me the horrors of their youth. I looked to the clock and knew I should be heading to bed because tomorrow was Easter. Easter. The celebratory feast day that millions of Catholics would spend rejoicing and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.
I also knew that the survivor I'd just spoken with would not be attending Church tomorrow; instead the victim of clergy abuse would struggle to get out of bed and spend most of the day weeping ...

Catholic Nun: Self Pleasure Turns People Gay And Gays Abuse Children

Organizations like Nuns on the Bus, which spreads the message of love throughout the country, despite opposition from the Catholic hierarchy, suggests to non-Catholics like me that nuns are the reasonable, even liberal branch of the Church. Unfortunately, Nuns on the Bus does not represent all nuns and some, like this lecturer in Charlotte, N.C., harken back to the days of rulers across the knuckles and telling children that masturbation will make them blind. This sister’s message, though, has been updated to reflect 21st Century hate. Instead of blindness, according to this nun, masturbation afflicts students with the gay and gay parents, well, they’re downright abusive.
On March 21, Sister Jane Dominic Laurel lectured a group of students at Charlotte Catholic High School. In the lecture, she condemned homosexuality with alleged statements like, “people are gay because they have an absent father figure, and therefore they have not received the masculinity they should have from their father.” She also claimed that, “gay men have had either over 500 or 1000 sexual partners.”

Psychotic nuns ran children's home like Nazi concentration ...

The Sisters of Nazareth property in Londonderry was like a Nazi concentration camp, with youngsters' screams of despair still haunting survivors, the UK's largest ever inquiry into institutional child abuse was told.
Inmates formed chain gangs to polish floors until they sparkled – with arms linked and rags under both feet – and were beaten with bamboo canes and straps.

The latest child abuse scandal is as Irish as it is Catholic

One of the most delicate questions surrounding the wicked child abuse by Irish Catholic clergy, brothers and nuns is this: how much of the abuse was Irish and how much of it was Catholic?
The question of Irishness has been hovering over the Catholic abuse scandals for years, ever since journalists noticed (but scarcely dared point out) that they seemed concentrated among the Irish Catholic diaspora of the United States, Canada and Australia. We always knew that terrible things happened in Ireland, too, though it was not until the publication of a 2,600-page report last week that we realised their extent

Laundries survivor: We were slaves

A report published today is expected to detail Irish government knowledge of what went on in Magdalene Laundries. The laundries were Catholic-run workhouses that operated in Ireland from the 1920s to the mid-1990s.
Girls considered "troubled" or what were then called "fallen women" were sent there by families or the courts. Ellen Murphy, a survivor of the Magdalene Laundries, told the Today programme's John Humphrys that she was put to work using large washing machines.

The Execution of the Holy Spirit.

The year was 1964. I was 14 years old and had just entered Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey. I did not want to go to Bergen but my domineering father whose self-interests for me showed no concern whatsoever for mine, or anyone else's, feelings forced me into the school.
I remember taking a long test for placement in the school in the gymnasium and I recall receiving the acceptance form. I had mixed feelings about this, having just spent eight years under the tutelage of Dominican nuns and the Sisters of Charity.

Thomas Adamson coldly confesses to sexually abusing children as a priest

It's been one hell of a week for Catholic dioceses in Minnesota. First Robert Carlson, a former Twin Cities bishop, claimed he didn't know that child sex was a crime. Then a St. Cloud family came forward accusing Father Timothy "Timo" Backous of having molested their son in 1990.
Now comes Thomas Adamson, a former priest who confessed under oath to having sexually abused children decades ago. Below are some of the video highlights of a May 16 deposition taken by attorney Jeff Anderson and his soldiers.

Statutes of limitations regarding clergy sexual abuse of minors

Statutes of limitations serve the common good of society because they force legal recourse to take place within a time frame that allows all the parties to present, explain, and prove their position, thereby serving the cause of justice. The Catholic Church’s law uses statutes of limitations (referred to as prescription in the Code of Canon Law) similar to the use of them in state legal systems.
In the course of the last thirty years throughout the country, however, as the sexual abuse of minors has become a matter of public concern and people have become more aware of the difficulty that victims / survivors have in finding their voice to report the abuse, the church’s law and the states’ laws regarding the statute of limitations have changed.

Los Angeles Catholic church files show decades of sexual abuse

Court-ordered release of documents reveal what Catholic orders knew of sexual abuse by priests, brothers and nuns. In therapy sessions, the priest confessed to shocking details he'd kept hidden for years: he had molested more than 100 boys, including his 5-year-old brother, had sex with male prostitutes, and frequented gay strip clubs.
The admissions of Reverend Ruben Martinez are among nearly 2,000 pages of secret files, unsealed Wednesday, which regard priests, brothers and nuns accused of child molestation while working in the Los Angeles archdiocese.

The church kept quiet about Brother Neil Richards' crimes but now he is locked up, awaiting his sentenc

Helped by Broken Rites, some of the victims of Christian Brother Desmond Eric ("Neil") Richards have achieved justice. On 27 November 2014, a Sydney court will sentence Richards (aged 75) for indecently assaulting young boys in the 1970s and '80s. The church had known for years about Richards' crimes but the crimes were concealed from the police (and from the public). And the Christian Brothers appointed him to be in charge of their worldwide website in Rome.
Brother "Neil" Richards has spent more than half a century as a Christian Brother, including as a headmaster, in Catholic schools in Sydney and regional New South Wales. When Desmond Eric Richards joined the order, a new Brother would normally adopt a new forename. Hence, he became Brother "Neil" Richards.

THE Hutchins School was told there was little chance a sex abuse victim would take legal action, but there was a danger he might use an apology to “go public”.

On the fifth anniversary of publication of Murphy report – Archbishop Diarmuid Martin reflects

The fifth anniversary of the publication of the Murphy Report on the management, by both Church and State organisations, of allegations of the sexual abuse of children by priests working in the Archdiocese of Dublin, brings back to me the horror of the revelations that the report contains.
Inevitably, my first reaction is to remember and recognise the horrible abuse that children experienced, which has left them with wounds and hurts in their lives which still remain today. The second reaction is to note how their hurt was in many cases made worse by the inadequacies of the responses of Church leaders and of the HSE and Garda Síochána

Catholic Church Scandal: Alaska children abused by priests 2-2

The Vatican is being exposed for what it is: The most criminal organization in existence. The crimes that they have managed to commit against humanity for 2000 years via its criminal priests, nuns, and evil religious leaders are now being discovered worldwide, as it is written that any day now, the Catholic Church will go up in flames and be destroyed forever, as it is the mother of all abominations on Earth.
The Protect Your Children Foundation is documenting and exposing all of its crimes worldwide, alerting entire nations of the dangers that the Catholic Church poses to our children in our communities, as they have been implementing crime schemes of rape, torture, starvation, human experiments, abuse, exploitation and more in its religious institutions, while claiming to 'help children'. The Vatican has utilized its false appearance of mercy, claiming they are representatives of Christ, when in fact, they do this to gain trust and commit crimes. Catholic Church in Canada Has Its Own History of Sexual Abuse

One of the darkest deeds in a dark history of child abuse was how the Catholic Church in the United States shipped pedophile priests to northern Alaska with no warning to the indigenous villages they were supposed to serve.
These villages were so poor and desperate that a priest arriving by dog sled every month or so really did seem a godsend. With a few toys and some candy, the child molesters among them could groom generations of children and corrupt whole communities. It’s hard to imagine the layers of damage.

Children in Nuns’ Care Forced to Wear Soiled Sheets, Eat Vomit

While nuns are notorious for being tough, there is a line, and those at the Sisters of Nazareth definitely crossed it at care homes in Derry, Northern Ireland. As part of an ongoing investigation of possible abuses in child care services during the 20th century projected to last into the summer of next year, a public inquiry uncovered shocking reports of child abuse and horrific experiences from more than 400 people who had spent time at one of two homes run by the nuns.
What they described was nothing short of appalling, and it speaks to a troubling need to audit long-term care facilities for children more closely.

Report reveals child abuse in Germany orphanages

Children who were mistreated and abused in child care homes in the Federal Republic of Germany between 1949 and 1975 will be compensated with 120 million Euros, paid for equally by the state, the Laender and the churches. This is the advice of a round table that presented its conclusion after two years of negotiations.
But those who suffered from systematic abuse all the way through their childhood could not hide their disappointment and their anger. They had demanded a onetime payment of 54.000 Euros. The pressure during negotiations was immense. They weren't allowed the advice of lawyers and up to the last day no figures were put on the table.

Child Abuse in a Catholic Orphanage: Our Years at St. Ann's

Growing up as a Catholic I was never told that my salvation was free. I was never allowed to read a Bible.
My family was torn apart when I was six and my mother became too ill to take care of us. I went to an orphanage, St. Ann's in Worcester, Mass., with my two older sisters. Our little brother, only a year old, was sent off to live with another family. Our hearts were broken.

Ideas of Childhood in Victorian Children's Fiction: Orphans, Outcasts and Rebels

Throughout the Victorian period, thousands of orphans and other unparented children existed on the fringes of society, where they were at once more pathetic and more of a threat to social stability than children in even the poorest of families.
Such figures often feature in children's literature, for propagandistic or less stridently didactic purposes. These solitary pilgrims or wayward souls were useful in the development of individual narratives, and also contributed to the development of the genre as a whole.

Abuse at the Mount Cashel orphanage in Newfoundland

The Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada (CBIC) is a branch of a lay Roman Catholic order which was founded in Ireland. They are most commonly referred to simply as the "Christian Brothers." They have opened schools in many countries; one was the Mount Cashel orphanage in St. John's, Newfoundland, on the East coast of Canada.
For many years, the local priests and the rest of the Roman Catholic church clergy were highly respected by almost all Newfoundlanders. Their behavior was considered beyond criticism. The Provincial government and police adopted a hands-off policy towards religious matters. When allegations of physical and sexual abuse started to surface in the late 1980s, the government, police and church cooperated in an unsuccessful cover-up.

458 children rescued from abusive orphanage in Mexico

Mexico said on Tuesday it had rescued 458 children from a vermin-infested refuge for abandoned boys and girls, some of whom it says it believes to have been sexually abused.
The attorney general's office said authorities raided a home known as La Gran Familia (The Big Family) in the western city of Zamora, following at least 50 complaints about its operators from local residents.

The church protected Brother Best, but his victims finally won

The Catholic order of Christian Brothers harboured Brother Robert Charles Best for many years while he was openly committing sexual crimes (including buggery) against young boys in his schools, an Australian court has been told. Colleagues of Brother Best knew about his crimes, the court was told.
In one school, Brother Best's criminal behaviour was witnessed by a colleague, Brother Fitzgerald, who merely chuckled, the court was told. In another school, Brother Best's behaviour was witnessed — and tolerated — by a colleague who was referred to in court as Brother "W", the court was told.

The Catholic Church still does not get child abuse

The conviction of Rolf Harris is a reminder that child abuse is an abuse of power. The crime persists because perpetrators are not challenged and dealt with speedily by the criminal justice system. Children are still abused in Ireland every day.
The HSE Annual Report 2013 shows that 6,462 children were in care at the end of 2013 and 1,547 children were on the Child Protection Notification system.

The 18 Orders: What They Do Now

Orders at the centre of the abuse controversy are involved in running schools and hospitals
SOME OF the 18 religious orders that signed the indemnity deal with the State are still involved in education in a significant way, with the Irish Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy accounting for a large number of schools. However, the numbers of religious in the 18 orders have fallen greatly in recent years and the majority are now reaching or have passed retirement age.

Witness suffered feelings of ‘abandonment and isolation’

A woman who was sent to Australia from a Belfast care home when she was a child has told the North’s Historical Institutional Abuse inquiry that she suffered feelings of “abandonment and isolation” when as an adult she became engaged to be married.
The 63-year-old native of Co Tyrone who was giving evidence by video link from Australia to the inquiry in Banbridge, Co Down, today said she was transported to Australia in 1955 when she was aged four.

Warning issued on mother-and-baby homes inquiry

A group representing people housed in mother-and-baby homes has warned that it will bring a complaint to the UN Committee Against Torture if the terms of a forthcoming inquiry are not inclusive.
Paul Redmond of the Coalition of Mother and Baby Home Survivors said the terms of reference of the Government’s commission of investigation into mother-and-baby homes must be comprehensive.

Abused and assaulted in a home where few cared

OUT of the many horrors Sam Adair says he faced at Rubane House – from being abused in a cold shower in the middle of the night, to the “death marches” of dreaded camping trips – one theme repeats.
The sheer brutal force of the physical abuse was something he stressed time and time again to the Historical Abuse Inquiry in Banbridge.

Nun accepts ‘grave injustice’ done to children sent to Australia

The Sisters of Nazareth have accepted that there was a “grave injustice” done to some 130 children who were sent to Australia from care homes in Northern Ireland as part of a child migration programme that mainly ran from the late 1920s to the mid 1950s.
Sister Brenda McCall, representing the Sisters of Nazareth, acknowledged the suffering caused to the children who were sent to Australia as part of a scheme by the Australian government to bring “white” children of “good stock” into the country.

Sisters of Nazareth nuns humiliated bed-wetting kids

A senior nun with the Sisters of Nazareth has admitted that nuns "humiliated" children who were in their care if they wet their bed.
Sister Brenda McCall, a member of the Sisters of Nazareth Congregational Group, was giving evidence to the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry when she agreed with claims from alleged victims that some nuns would have punished the children for wetting the bed.

300,000 babies stolen from their parents - and sold for adoption

Up to 300,000 Spanish babies were stolen from their parents and sold for adoption over a period of five decades, a new investigation reveals.
The children were trafficked by a secret network of doctors, nurses, priests and nuns in a widespread practice that began during General Franco’s dictatorship and continued until the early Nineties.

We were child slaves from a young age'

Amid blanket coverage of high-profile child sex abuse investigations in the wake of revelations involving Jimmy Savile and other celebrities, one child abuse inquiry has remained below the public's radar. But the Northern Ireland Historical Institutional Abuse inquiry is slowly emerging from relative obscurity.
The inquiry is separate from a recent major police investigation in the country that has led to the arrest of more than 30 people for sexual exploitation of children and young people who have gone missing from the care system over the past 18 months.

Pastor used to thrash girls when they asked for food

The head of the orphanage situated at Tara Nagar locality in Jhotwara here was not only involved in sexual abuse and rape of three minor girls, but also used to thrash the girls whenever they asked for food. Such was the scenario that girls used to be dependent on the mid-day meal of the government school where they were studying. This was stated in the chargesheet filed against pastor Johnson Chacko in a district court on Thursday.
The police said that they have not only recorded the statements of the two girls aged under 10 and 14-year-old, they have also spoken to nearly 19 other girls staying at the orphanage.

Abuse by Women Religious (nuns and sisters)

For at least eight years, victims of child molesting nuns and members of SNAP have repeatedly urged America's largest organization of nuns to expose the truth about child sex crimes and cover ups by women religious. But the LCWR (Leadership Conference of Women Religious) continues to essentially rebuff us and them.
Now more than ever, since they're being attacked by bishops like we have been (and are being), nuns should be sympathetic to our plight. It grieves us to have to keep prodding them to take long-overdue, simple steps to protect the vulnerable and heal the wounded. But how can we do otherwise?

No more residential school cover ups; Maria's Blog

Kuper Island residential school survivor Elmer James suffered repeated sexual, physical and emotional abuse as a child at the school. He remembers being given extra treats from the abusers — payment for keeping quiet. You can imagine how a federal gag order preventing him from speaking about his out-of-court settlement with the government must sit.
Residential schools are Canada’s greatest shame of the 20th century. They are the greatest shame of the churches that operated them and the governments that sanctioned them. It’s time to stop hiding. The public needs to know how widespread the residential school evils were and what their government is doing to redress them.

Justice. Truth. Accountability:

So far, reports of abuse within the Church have focussed almost exclusively on male clerics. But many young children also suffered at the hands of Catholic nuns.
In the late 1950s, the Roman Catholic Hospital of Our Dear Lady Mother of in Eindhoven was hell for Petra Jorissen. The reason it was had a name: sister Johanetty. "We will break that little will of yours, break it," she would squeal, as she forced the remains of a meal Jorissen had just thrown up back down her throat.

Blind orphan abused by nun speaks out

BLIND Vietnamese orphan who was five when she came to Australia, 11 when she was sexually abused by a Catholic nun, and 35 when she received $15,000 compensation for her ‘‘personal trauma’’, has spoken out for the 10 per cent of people reporting female perpetrators to the child sexual abuse royal commission.
‘‘I want people to know a small percentage of women are just as capable of abusing power as men are,’’ said Emma Pham, pictured, who was sexually abused by Dominican nun Sister Kay Fennell at the St Lucy’s School for the Visually Impaired at Wahroonga in 1979.

Children abused by Nuns at Catholic Nazareth House; 1 of 2

Abuse By Nuns: Cait Finnegan

My name is Cait Finnegan and I’m a survivor of sexual abuse by a Sister of Mercy.
I grew up in Woodside/Sunnyside Queens, NYC and attended Queen of Angels elementary school where we were taught by the Sisters of Mercy.  Later I attended Mater Christi Diocesan High School in Astoria where the girls were taught by the Sisters of Mercy and the boys were taught by the Christian Brothers.

Abusive Nuns In The USA And Worldwide

Clearly the Vatican does not wish to believe modern nuns can be abusive. Indeed it was this thought that prompted New England RC psychology graduate, Ashley Hill, to set about the difficult task of collecting evidence which she has now published in her Habits of Sin An Expose of Nuns Who Sexually Abuse Children and Each Other. The research was prompted by her own childhood experiences.
She began by placing advertisements in the papers for victims to come forward, and then set up an abuse by nuns network, which concentrated on sexual abuse but also frequently revealed physical abuse. This topic had never been scientifically investigated before.

Joni Mitchell – Magdalene Laundries Lyrics and Song

I'd just turned twenty-seven
When they sent me to the sisters
For the way men looked at me
Branded as a Jezebel
I knew I was not bound for Heaven
I'd be cast in shame
Into the Magdalene laundries

Most girls come here pregnant
Some by their own fathers
Bridget got that belly
By her parish priest
We're trying to get things white as snow
All of us woe-begotten-daughters
In the streaming stains
Of the Magdalene laundries

Prostitutes and destitutes
And temptresses like me
Fallen women
Sentenced into dreamless drudgery
Why do they call this heartless place
Our Lady of Charity?
Oh charity!

These bloodless brides of Jesus
If they had just once glimpsed their groom
Then they'd know, and they'd drop the stones
Concealed behind their rosaries
They wilt the grass they walk upon
They leech the light out of a room
They'd like to drive us down the drain
At the Magdalene laundries

Peg O'Connell died today
She was a cheeky girl
A flirt
They just stuffed her in a hole!
Surely to God you'd think at least some bells should ring!
One day I'm going to die here too
And they'll plant me in the dirt
Like some lame bulb
That never blooms come any spring
Not any spring
No, not any spring
Not any spring

In their own words: Survivors’ accounts of life inside a Magdalene Laundry

THE REPORT of the inter-departmental committee into the State’s role in Magdalene Laundries includes a section devoted to the first-hand accounts of survivors who spoke to the committee about their experiences.
Among those who gave oral evidence to the committee, and whose quotes appear below, are women represented by the Irish Women’s Survivor’s Network, Magdalene Survivors Together, Justice for Magdalenes, women who live in nursing homes under the care of the orders who ran their Laundries, and women who approached the inquiry alone.

Philomena Lee told me her secret: the baby boy nuns forced her to give away

Small coincidences have big consequences. It’s a truism, but in writing my book Philomena – now made into a startlingly moving film by Stephen Frears, Steve Coogan and Judi Dench – two events showed how true a truism can be.
The first concerned myself and an unexpected meeting at a party in 2004. I’d recently lost my job as a government communications director after a row with Alastair Campbell and Stephen Byers (it was about telling the truth) and I was at a loose end.
