A look at some of the priests and nuns in a new report on clergy child sex abuse in Illinois

A new report lists nearly 400 priests and other Catholic Church officials with Illinois ties who have been the subject of child sex abuse claims, according to the group of lawyers who represent victims and released the study. Many of the names on the so-called Anderson Report have been revealed before through court documents, criminal charges, media reports and church officials themselves. Some, like Daniel McCormack, have become notorious symbols of the abuse scandal in Chicago.

Pell's hometown at the center of Australia's sex abuse scandal

here was a time when Ballarat, a regional Australian city northwest of Melbourne, was proud of its most famous son. Cardinal George Pell was considered by many Catholics here to be one of the good ones, a former school captain at St. Patrick's College in Ballarat who made it from rural Australia all the way to heart of the Vatican. But as Pell rose through the ranks of the Roman Catholic Church, his hometown concealed a dark secret.

An Open Letter to Cardinal Reinhard Marx

Your Eminence: I noted with interest your recent announcement of a “binding synodal process” during which the Church in Germany will discuss the celibacy of the Latin-rite Catholic priesthood, the Church’s sexual ethic, and clericalism, these being “issues” put on the table by the crisis of clerical sexual abuse. Perhaps the following questions will help sharpen your discussions.

Montreal archbishop calls child abuse in Catholic Church 'a wound' to be cured

“Trust is one of the victims. The victim is a victim. The victim's family is a victim, the community is a victim,” Christian Lépine tells the Montreal Gazette. For Christian Lépine, archbishop of Montreal, establishing an independent committee to audit 60 years of church files in search of allegations of sexual abuse is an attempt to re-establish a link of trust between the Catholic Church and the public.

Attorney: Others knew about Bransfield’s behavior

The attorney representing a former alter server and secretary in West Virginia’s Catholic Church says his client came forward with allegations against retired Bishop Michael Bransfield to seek an avenue that would encourage others to come forward. The man, identified only as J.E. in the lawsuit, claims he was a victim of sexual harassment for years at the hands of Bransfield and was the victim of an alleged sexual assault that took place five years ago.

Priest told boy that 2-year sex abuse is 'good because it's in God's place,' per lawsuit

A priest slowly won the trust of a Barrigada altar boy he sexually abused for two years in the 1970s by telling the minor that the abuse was "good because it's in God's place" and that he "will get used to it," according to a lawsuit filed on Tuesday. The plaintiff, identified in local court documents only as J.V. to protect his privacy, demands $5 million in minimum damages.

Theologians get tough with Germany's bishops over Church reform

They want Catholic leaders to open their eyes to the precariousness of the present situation and have a serious debate on hot-button issues. Theologians in Germany were recently invited to speak to the nation's Catholic hierarchy about the clergy abuse crisis and they used the rare opportunity to chastise the more than 60 bishops for being too slow in pushing for major Church reforms.

Australia’s Disgraced Cardinal: Paradoxes, Ironies And Martyrdom? – Analysis

George Pell, the man, the priest, bishop, cardinal, the Roman Catholic Church’s highest-ranking disgraced official, has always generated controversy with commentators, academics, and the general public over his 50-year career. Today, with the Australian prelate’s case up for appeal in the court system, the issue is not about his guilt or innocence but rather whether he received a fair trial.

Trying to cope with pedophilia in Catholic Church

I was a Roman Catholic Priest for twenty-five years, until the church ordered me to leave the priesthood because of my writings critical of the church’s hierarchal, patriarchal structure and because of its inferiorizing of women and of the feminine in all of us, who, as Genesis tells us, were created “male and female”.

Vatican Officials Mass Resignation Over Alleged Sexual Abuse Scandals Involvement

More and more priests and officials of the Catholic Church are resigning, following their involvement in sexual abuse cases in which they committed, or they covered up upon the fact. The swath of resignations and stepping down by members of the clergy follows the renewed commitment of the Vatican to fight against sexual abuse within the Church and the historic four-day summit called by Pope Francis to address the problem last February.

Taking stock of the clergy sexual abuse crisis: Protecting children

Last month’s summit in Rome on child sex abuse did not break new ground for those, like myself, who have been following this crisis for more than 30 years, but it did made clear — again — that the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church has been devastating for the victims of abuse and for the church as a whole. There are three parts to the crisis, which I plan to deal with in three successive columns.

Black Lives Matter In more ways than one.

We need to be very clear, as Catholics, that the Church cannot be cleaned up by the clergy — especially the hierarchy. As is becoming more and more clear, many members of the hierarchy have a heavily vested interest in not having things cleaned up because they themselves are the actual perpetrators of homosexual predation on teenagers or young adults — or they have actively participated in the cover-up, which is still ongoing.

French Priest Claims Child Rape Is Not Violence But ‘Tenderness’

Outrage in France: A French priest is being condemned after suggesting that children raped by Catholic clergy were willing victims seeking tenderness from their abusers. Paul Muschick: Here's another example of Pope Francis being weak against priest sex abuse

The Catholic Church continues talking about how it must confront once-and-for-all the evil of priests sexually abusing children. The church’s actions continue to show those words are hollow. I’m talking this time specifically about Pope Francis. The pope declined Monday to accept the resignation of Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of France, who was convicted March 7 of failing to report a known pedophile priest to police. Contrast that with what the pope said only a month ago at a worldwide summit he called to address the sex abuse scandal.

How Chief Judge Kidd separated the Catholic Church from the rule of law

In preliminary observations to his sentence of Cardinal George Pell, Chief Judge Peter Kidd of the County Court outlined what was and wasn’t involved in his deliberations, given that he was required to sentence the Catholic cleric “within a unique context”. Prior to sentencing Cardinal Pell to six years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of three years and eight months, he noted the contextual factors of the cardinal being “one of the most senior figures within the Catholic Church, a figure of “significant interest” who has faced “extraordinary and widespread publicity for a number of years”, with “strong, trenchant and sometimes emotional criticism” of him.

What Pell's conviction might trigger

The Australian crisis is about a person and by no means as all-consuming as the crises the Church has faced elsewhere over time. The conviction of Cardinal Pell among others in the Catholic hierarchy is at least a cataclysm. Or just what the doctor ordered? Or both? One would hope that an institution devoted to the promotion of virtue would change because it should. Wrong! Institutions only ever change because necessity demands it.

TUESDAYS WITH TERESA: everyone belongs

In light of the events in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday, these words spoke to me of humanity’s need to be continually transformed. It also spoke to me of our need to have mountaintop experiences.  Last week I wrote of our own pain, grief and suffering around sexual abuse by some individuals in our church and the impact that is having on so many and now this week all of us are feeling the pain, grief and suffering because of the violence poured out upon the Muslim community, while they were in their sacred place at prayer.

Faced With an Ongoing Sexual-Abuse Crisis, What Are Catholic Parents to Do?

As it has been for decades, the Catholic Church is in the midst of a crisis, one whose long reach has traumatized thousands and left one of the world’s oldest institutions struggling to find a way forward. In late February, the Vatican held a high-profile conference on the sexual-abuse crisis—the revelations of decades of abuse, by priests in different parts of the globe, of children, adult seminarians, and nuns.

Covering up child sex abuse is as low as it gets

When child abuse is uncovered, many ask how an adult could do such unspeakable things to an innocent. But I want to ask: How can so many ‘good’ people not do anything about it, and so many others cover up for abusers? Earlier this month, an elementary school teacher in a northern province was accused of molesting multiple fifth-grade schoolgirls by the girls’ parents. In a meeting with school leaders and teachers, the girls said the teacher pinched their nose, touched their thighs and groped their bottoms. One said he put his hand inside her shirt.

God makes people ‘gay’, says priest standing in for Maltese archbishop in TV interview

Charles Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta and Pope Francis’ point man on the sexual abuse crisis, recently sent a priest to speak in his stead on a popular Maltese television show who stated that God “created” people as homosexuals, and that homosexual relationships are not condemned by the Church but are seen as legitimate forms of “love.” The priest’s statements, which were given in translation to LifeSite by an anonymous Maltese source, directly contradict the Catholic Church’s perennial teaching condemning all sexual acts outside of natural sexual intercourse between a man and a woman in marriage.

Headlines on the Catholic Church and child abuse do not present the full picture

The recent conviction of Cardinal Pell confirmed for many people their view that the Catholic Church is an irredeemable institution doing far more harm than good for the world. Poland's Catholic Church says 625 minors abused by priests since 1990

Poland's Catholic Church leaders released a study on Thursday that said 625 minors have been abused by 382 priests from 1990 through June of last year — a revelation marking the first time officials have ever presented statistics about the scope of the child sex abuse problem there, the AP reports. Details: Officials found that 345 victims were under age 15, 280 victims between 15 to 18 and 58% of the victims were male, per the AP. The report comes as the Catholic Church, one of the world’s most powerful institutions, grapples with backlash over the growing number of child sex abuse scandals around the globe.

The end of our Innocence

On Friday March 15, 2019, a gunman walked into two Christchurch mosques and killed 49 people. It was a shocking, brutal assault, the kind New Zealanders had told themselves happened only in other countries. But the terror of a hate-filled mass murder had visited our nation now too.
This was the end of our innocence. Friday prayers at the Masjid Al Noor were scheduled to start at 1:30pm and run for about 40 minutes, but there were still a few cars pulling into the carpark as prayers began. There were about 300 worshippers gathering – New Zealanders whose places of birth included Afghanistan, India, Syria, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Palestine, the Philippines, Jordan, Turkey, Malaysia – but also some visitors from abroad, including Bangladeshi cricketers who were due to play the Black Caps at the Hagley Oval the next day.
Shoes were lined up on shelves at the door, and those inside were wearing socks, or were barefoot. At Linwood Masjid, 5km to the west, more than 100 more worshippers were also coming together.
A couple of minutes after prayers began, a man got into his car in an industrial park just a couple of hundred metres to the west of the mosque, and launched a Facebook livestream. He’d just published internet links to a document outlining his murderous racist ideology; now he was going to broadcast a video of the atrocities he would commit in their name.

French cardinal’s downfall a lesson in how accountability happens

ROME - Charles Collins, the managing editor of Crux, is a smart guy. Recently he wrote a typically perceptive analysis about problems with the idea of using Metropolitan archbishops to deliver accountability for clerical sexual abuse, and so we had him on Crux’s weekly radio show on March 4 to talk about it. RELATED: ‘Metropolitan model’ may not answer question of abusive bishops

I'm speaking out for my husband, his sister and all other sexual abuse survivors

Between the ages of nine and 11 my husband was molested by a podiatrist who his parents had taken him to see to treat his flat feet. By the time we'd met in our 20s, he'd barely told a soul. Instead he put it into the "dark corners or recesses" of his brain, as the former choir boy told the jury in the case against Cardinal George Pell as to why he didn't report his abuse for years. He was in shock.

Man sues Catholic Church for allowing priest accused of sex abuse to lead youth group

A man who claims to have been abused by a priest as a child is suing the Catholic Church for negligence because, even after the abuse was reported, that priest was placed in charge of youth ministry activities. Attorney Gregory Gianforcaro said he and his client, known only as Mr. X, met with the Archdiocese of Newark on Oct. 24, 2003, to detail allegations of sexual abuse by the Rev. Kevin Gugliotta.

Roz Ward on clergy hypocrisy and the valorisation of child molesters

In the wake of cardinal George Pell’s guilty verdict for child abuse, the hypocrisy of his conservative supporters and the church leadership has been unrelentingly disgusting. Before the jury made its decision, Pell, like the investment banks that caused the global financial crisis, was considered by many to be “too big to fail”. But fail he did, in the most appalling way. For all those who have managed to survive after being assaulted and abused at the hands of the Catholic Church, the conviction of Pell is one small step in the struggle for justice.

Defending Pell: Father Brennan and his Catholic Church have learnt nothing

Father Frank Brennan’s position on the Pell case is a staggering admission that the Catholic Church has learnt nothing – despite the Royal Commission – about child sexual abuse, its aftermath and its effects on victims, families and communities, writes Dr Jennifer Wilson. IN AN ARTICLE in The Australian on 28 February, 'Father Frank Brennan on Cardinal George Pell guilty verdict', Father Frank Brennan –Jesuit priest, professor of law at the Public Policy Institute of the Australian Catholic University and visiting professorial fellow at the University of NSW – indicated 'he did not question the honesty and truthfulness of the victim' in the Pell case and that a 'suspension of final judgement meant "to disrespect" to anyone involved.'

Number of people joining Catholic church down, "but it could be worse..."

The number of people in the Catholic Church has declined world-wide as reports of sexual abuse of children by preists and laypeople shakes many communities, including Erie. Despite this, more than 150 people in Erie alone are seeking to join the church this year. "It could be worse," says Sister Nancy Fischer. She is the RCIA Process Coordinator for the Erie Diocese. (RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults).

An embarrassment of sex and riches?

Coming on the heels of the most extraordinary meeting of all heads of Catholic bishops councils all over the world in the Vatican, the recent report of an alleged rape of a minor by a priest in Dumanjug is the last thing Cebuano Catholics would have wanted to hear. The news could not have come at a worse time: Australian media had just reported last week the conviction of Cardinal George Pell for sexual offenses he made when he began his career as head of the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Seminaries, relatively recent in church history, are still evolving

Seminaries, relatively recent in church history, are still evolving. Seminaries — set apart from the secular world and seen by some as a breeding ground for clericalist attitudes that fostered the sex abuse crisis — have come in for criticism. Yet leaders of Catholic seminaries say that their priestly formation programs have already successfully implemented curricula that can check future sex abuse.

George Yeo claims his belief in Cardinal Pell’s innocence is “not based on blind faith” in latest comments

Ex-Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo has reiterated his support for Cardinal George Pell on social media and has asserted that his belief in Pell’s innocence “is a matter of conscience. It is not based on blind faith.” A former treasurer of the Catholic Church, Pell is the most senior official of the Church to be convicted of child sexual abuse. In June 2017, Pell was charged in Victoria, Australia, with multiple historical sexual assault offences; he denied all charges.

Turning the tables

Mr. Topchik’s “heart-wrenching” tirade against faith-based institutions and “right-wing” conservatives is another example of liberal intolerance. They cannot allow a different point of view to be tolerated and yes, supported without branding the supporters as evil, racist, homophobic, etc. Let me turn the tables a little. There have been 45,789,558 abortions reported to the CDC from 1970 to 2015. This does not include some states who have opted out of reporting or who sporadically report, e.g. California, Maryland.

As a survivor in my childhood of clergy sex abuse in California

As a survivor in my childhood of clergy sex abuse in California and, as a survivor in my adulthood of clergy power abuse while working as an independent advocate for other survivors over the past 26 years, I’d like to clarify a few points for Catholic-Christians in the valley who, for whatever reason, did not avail themselves of the excellent, totally transparent, online access to last week’s abuse summit presentations and beautiful, penitential service at the Vatican.

Court to hear case of Roman Catholic priests who abused deaf, mute children for 50 years

A new court case reveals that Roman Catholic priests working at schools for deaf and mute children in Peru, Argentina and Italy, abused them for at least 50 years. The children came from mostly poor families who trusted the Roman Catholic Church to care for them. Their parents did not know their children were being tortured by priests who threatened them if they tried to tell anyone using sign language.

By the Grace of God

French director François Ozon has delivered one of the best films of his eclectic career with By the Grace of God, a drama whose seriousness and sincerity marks a tonal shift for a filmmaker typically famous for sexual and sensual provocation. Instead, this chronicle of a real-life grassroots campaign to out Catholic priests who committed and covered up of historic sexual abuse is unsensational and methodical, immaculately written through a script that radically tells three different stories that slide seamlessly together.

The Vatican expelled a Costa Rican priest over sex abuse allegations on Feb. 25, just one day after the conclusion of an historic four-day meeting of bishops in Rome on the protection of minors. Both men have also filed a complaint with the Apostolic Nunciature against Archbishop Quiros for helping to cover up Viquez’s crimes.

Vatican to open archives on WWII-era Pope accused of staying silent during Holocaust

Vatican hopes global clergy abuse meeting will be 'turning point' and help repair the reputation of the Catholic Church. At a time when the Catholic Church - rocked by a litany of child abuse scandals that span the globe and go back decades - is under intense pressure to be more transparent, Pope Francis has decided to open up the Vatican archives on one of his most controversial predecessors.

The Catholic Church must massively reform to prevent more abuse

Undoubtedly, many cardinals, bishops and priests are holy people. But the overall structure of the Church is clearly broken. The governance of the Catholic Church has to change — that’s the real lesson arising from the priest pedophile scandal. For a thousand years, the Church has been run like a medieval monarchy with a “king” at the top — the Pope — who is surrounded by princes (the Cardinals and bishops), all of whom are guided by God.

Alleged Pell abuse victim to sue over Ballarat swimming claims

Melbourne, Australia, Mar 4, 2019 / 04:40 pm (CNA).- A man who says he was sexually assaulted in the 1970s by Australia’s Cardinal George Pell says he will file a lawsuit against the cardinal, after prosecutors scuttled a plan to try Pell for the alleged abuse. Charges related to “David’s” claim were dropped weeks before prosecutors decided to scuttle the entire trial.

Philadelphia priest charged with raping girl, recording their sex acts

A suspended Catholic priest has been charged with raping a teenage girl at his former Roxborough parish and recording their sexual encounter five years ago. According to court records, the Rev. Armand Garcia, most recently of St. Martin of Tours Parish in the city’s Summerdale section, surrendered to Philadelphia police Monday — a year after the investigation of his conduct emerged into public view with a police search of his rectory.

Francis of Assisi's model for church reform may help in the abuse crisis

There is a famous story about St. Francis of Assisi that takes place early in his experience of ongoing conversion to live a more committed Christian life. According to those friars who knew St. Francis during his lifetime and documented their stories of him in an early Franciscan text known as The Legend of the Three Companions, one day he was walking by the country church of San Damiano and felt led by the Holy Spirit to enter and pray before the crucifix hanging there. As he was praying, the crucifix "spoke to him in a tender and kind voice: 'Francis, don't you see that my house is being destroyed? Go, then, and rebuild it for me.' "

Day of reckoning: A wave of fresh accusations against priests has been unleashed

After decades of anguish and argument over sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, a final reckoning may be coming for New York parishioners. Over the last quarter century, sexual abuse allegations, some of them horrendous, have been lodged in fits and starts against more than 400 priests and others associated with the church in New York state. The church hierarchy has been accused of concealing the truth about sexual misconduct as well.

Sins of the Fathers

What will accountability look like for the Catholic Church? For years now, survivors of Catholic clergy sexual abuse have sought accountability at the local level, taking claims to their parish or bishop. But the Roman Catholic Church is a global institution, and experts say its cover-up of child abuse reaches the upper echelons of church leadership. What would it take to go after the Vatican?

Cardinal George Pell: A special place in hell

Australian cardinal now faces up to 50 years behind bars for sexually abusing children. My late mother was as devout a Catholic as you could get — Sunday mass, fish on Fridays, donations to the parish church. She even left provisions in her will to a charity that helps finance young priests. I think she’s rolling in her grave right now at the level of abuse that has infected members of her faith’s clergy.

Bishop Olmsted Finds Roots of Abuse Scandal in Poor Priestly Formation

Phoenix shepherd writes about three factors: the sexual revolution, weak seminaries and clericalism. In face of the sex-abuse scandals in the Church, Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix issued a column this month asking the question: “What went wrong in priestly formation?” Bishop Thomas Olmsted highlighted in his Feb. 17 column at The Catholic Sun three factors that contributed to the clerical sexual-abuse scandal: the sexual revolution, weak seminaries and clericalism.

Pope calls for ‘all-out battle’ against sexual child abuse

In his final address to nearly 190 bishops attending last week’s Vatican summit on sex abuse, Pope Francis called for the eradication of abuse both inside and outside the Roman Catholic Church. “I make a heartfelt appeal for an all-out battle against the abuse of minors both sexually and in other areas, on the part of all authorities and individuals, for we are dealing with abominable crimes that must be erased from the face of the earth. This is demanded by all the many victims hidden in families and in the various settings of our societies,” Pope Francis said.

‘This storm will not pass by’

At the end of the movie “Spotlight,” the screen went black before a message appeared noting that in 2002 alone, The Boston Globe’s investigative reporting team published nearly 600 stories about sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. The next screen noted, “249 priests and brothers were publicly accused of sexual abuse within the Boston Archdiocese.”

Keep up pressure on abusers

Kudos, praises and thanks to Richard Serbin for taking such a bold step to shine additional spotlight on the Catholic Church and its decades of cover-up (“Vatican should chip in for clergy abuse survivors,” Feb. 17, TribLIVE). Of course, no need to stop there. Sadly, virtually every other religion, truth be told, will have multiple “skeletons in their closets; itching to come outside” (most recently the Southern Baptist church).

Victim accuses Archbishop of Kingston of trying to ‘cover church’s ass’

More victims come forward after Pell conviction

More victims are coming forward with allegations of abuse to the Catholic Church after the revealing of Australian Cardinal George Pell's child sex convictions. Melbourne Archbishop Peter Comensoli has apologised to abuse victims and said people were calling the Church on Tuesday as news broke of Pell's guilty verdict. He is the highest Catholic cleric convicted of sex abuse.
