Victims of abuse by nuns speak out

Victims of sexual abuse by nuns and their supporters will protest outside the national convention of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) in Dallas today.
The group, affiliated with the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), has asked to speak at LCWR's annual convention for seven years. LCWR has denied the request, saying that is not the proper venue.

Man Says He Was Abused By Nun

VIENNA — A man says he was abused by a nun while a child – the first such accusation amid widening allegations of sexual misdeeds leveled against Austria's Roman Catholic church.
Salzburg church officials revealing the allegations Friday did not name the alleged victim. They said the man complained to them of being abused by a nun, a priest and several monks between 1965 and 1972.

Children sexually abused by Dutch nuns

AMSTERDAM – Nuns have been guilty of sexual abuse of children as well. Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad writes this on Thursday on its website.
That many priests have in the past sexually abused children has become known in recent months. Now, however, it turns out that religious women are not without sins as well.

Victims of Nun's Sex Abuse Need Our Compassion, Too

Imagine the reaction of the thousands of men and women sexually abused by American nuns to the continuous media coverage lauding their tormenters and torturers as the ultimate practitioners of virtue. In response to the multitude of commentaries championing religious women against the Vatican, I agree with Kris Ward of the National Survivors Advocates Coalition (NSAC) who wrote:

Abused by nun, native woman tells commission

P.E.I. survivors of Indian residential schools had an opportunity Tuesday to testify about their horrific treatment at the hands of the federal government and the church.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission held an all-day hearing at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel. The commission gives people an opportunity to speak openly, or privately, about the residential school system that existed in Canada for more than 100 years.

Victim, experts tell of abuse by nuns

Myra Hidalgo was 12 when she met Sr. Cheryl Porte, a young, charming nun who was her teacher at Opelousas Catholic Middle School in Southwest Louisiana.
Porte, a member of the Marianites of the Holy Cross, taught her about “theology, the Beatles, Carl Jung and social justice,” said Hidalgo.
And, after earning her trust, Porte taught her about sex -- coaxing the 12-year-old into a sexual relationship that lasted more than two years.

Oakdale Woman Warns of Sexual Abuse by Nuns

At first, Mary Dunford's story sounds all too familiar: a life shattered by pain and confusion after being sexually abused by a trusted church figure decades ago.
But Dunford, 63, of Oakdale says it was a nun, not a priest, who abused her while she attended a Roman Catholic boarding school as a teen-ager. Years after she brought the abuse to the attention of the order that ran the school, she is clear about her agenda.

For He Has Sinned and the nuns knew about it

Two decades ago, an 11-year-old boy from the Bay Area was honored with an invitation most devout Catholics would envy. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her work among the developing world's poor, was celebrating Mass at her order's convent in Noe Valley. The ceremony was part of a retreat led by one of the famed humanitarian nun's close spiritual advisers, a Jesuit priest and former University of San Francisco professor named Donald McGuire.
It was at McGuire's bidding that the 11-year-old came to serve as an altar boy that morning at St. Paul's Convent, a boxy building of yellow stucco that rises from a tree-lined block near the intersection of 29th and Church streets. (The convent houses local novices in the international Missionaries of Charity order, founded by Mother Teresa in 1950.) The priest was close to the boy's family: He had baptized the boy, and offered his mother spiritual and psychological counseling over the years. Indeed, within church circles, McGuire was something of a celebrity himself.

Residential schools timeline

A timeline of key events of the last few years in Canada’s residential schools tragedy.

Timeline
2005: The agreement-in-principle is signed between the federal government, survivors and church organizations.
Sept. 19, 2007: The Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement is formally signed and enacted. The agreement will lead to the creation of two separate bodies: the Independent Assessment Process, responsible for administering claims, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

American ultra-orthodox charge sexual abuse at Israeli seminaries

The head of a chain of religious seminaries in Israel, accused of engaging in sexual abuse and fraud, is now the target of a class-action suit by members of the American ultra-Orthodox community in a Chicago court.
Rabbi Elimelech Meisels, the operator of four seminaries for post-high school girls, stands accused of having “engaged in a fraudulent and unlawful scheme to induce Orthodox Jewish parents from across the United States to send their daughters to various seminaries in Israel that he controlled under the guise of educational and spiritual development” for the purposes of “sexually assaulting these vulnerable young girls” since 2004, according to a copy of the complaint obtained by the Failed Messiah blog.

Shining a Light on Child Sexual Abuse

The publication of a report into child sexual abuse in Rotherham is harrowing reading, both in the scale of the horrendous abuse and the appalling errors and cover-up by senior staff, local politicians and the police.
Even more depressing is the fact that none of this comes as a complete surprise. Similar failings were highlighted in previous reports, such as Rochdale, and we will undoubtedly see more reports like these in the future. Young people have been let down by the system for far too long.

Victorian Education Department stands by senior bureaucrat Sonia Sharp

Victorian Education Department stands by senior bureaucrat Sonia Sharp, named in damning Rotherham sex abuse report
One of the senior British bureaucrats who failed to prevent the systematic rape and physical abuse of  children in the English town of Rotherham has relocated to Melbourne and been appointed a deputy secretary in Victoria's Education Department.

Drugged and targeted for sex in Rotherham: they were the lucky ones

1400 children were abused and raped in the northern English town.  Vicky counts herself as one of the lucky ones. Stalked from the age of 15, plied with drink and slipped drugs until she became estranged from her despairing parents; ferried at night by strangers twice her age to unknown male-only parties; on one occasion locked in a house, her only escape through a window.
She was bullied and pestered constantly for sex, but unlike some of her friends she was never raped. In modern day Rotherham, that is seen as good fortune.

Second agency 'lost' copy of child sex files

Deepening fears of cover-up add to pressure for a national inquiry. Fears over an establishment cover-up of an alleged Westminster paedophile ring in the 1980s deepened as it emerged that "explosive" evidence lost by the Home Office was also handed to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The dossier, believed to contain child abuse allegations relating to at least eight public figures, was compiled by the campaigning Conservative MP Geoffrey Dickens, who died in 1995.

Man raised in orphanages uses memoir to reach the abused, abandoned

Sr. Camille: The publication of your memoir, Raised by the Church (by Edward Rohs and Judith Estrine), has resulted in numerous interviews in print, radio and television. Why do you think this is?
Edward Rohs: First of all, my story is unique and, as everyone tells me, it's heart-wrenching. Second, very little has been written about orphanages and institutions in New York City. It's a book about the history of orphanages coupled with my personal upbringing in five Catholic orphanages. People are intrigued to learn what it's like to grow up without parents.

Nun rejects claims of child abuse at Derry care home

One of the Sisters of Nazareth who staffed a children’s home in Derry has denied allegations of physical, emotional and psychological abuse of boys under her care.
The nun, the first to answer questions at the abuse inquiry since it began public hearings in January, denied she ever hit any child or lost her temper. She further denied children were ridiculed or mocked by her for running away or wetting the bed. Allegations of ritual humiliation were also rejected by her.

Complaints of Sex Abuse by Nuns Begin to Emerge

The Pain Is Strong for Accusers Just Coming to Terms with What They Say Happened to Them. Even now, decades later, the victims' voices falter as they describe the encounters that damaged them in ways they cannot fully cast off.
Mary Dunford tells of a molester visiting her dormitory bed when she was 15. Susan Pavlak speaks of the teacher who talked to her of love, then seduced her at 16. Siblings Christine Bertrand and Karen Britten and their childhood friend Patricia Schwartz describe how their piano teacher touched them in ways no adult should touch a child.

1,400 Children in Rotherham, England, Were Sexually Abused

A report released on Tuesday on accusations of widespread sexual abuse in the northern England city of Rotherham found that about 1,400 minors — some as young as 11 years old — were beaten, raped and trafficked from 1997 to 2013 as the local authorities ignored a series of red flags.
Some children were doused in gasoline and threatened with being set on fire if they reported their abusers, the report said, and others were forced to watch rapes and threatened with the same fate. In more than a third of the cases, the victims appear to have been known to child protection agencies, but the police and local government officials failed to act.

Rotherdam: Cowardice must never be an option

Child protection officials in Rotherham, England are facing worldwide scorn for saying that they did not report the sexual abuse of 1400 children because they feared being branded “racists.”
The child victims were horrifically molested and trafficked by men of Pakistani descent over a 16-year period. At the time, government officials knew about approximately a third of the abuse allegations … and did nothing (or impeded arrest and prosecution).

Abuse at Goodwood Orphanage, Adelaide, South Australia 1950s

My name is Mary. I was at the Goodwood Orphanage for some 13 years from the early 1950s to the early 1960s. I now live interstate. I have undertaken psychotherapy since then, and my doctor reports that I am one of the most traumatised patients she has had to deal with.
When I used to wet the bed I would be forced to stand with the wet sheet over my head while standing on the white line. I was then made to wash the sheet in cold water by hand, barely able to reach the tub. Then I would have to go and hang the sheet on the line. This started between the ages of 7-9.

“Philomena” and Ireland’s Magdalen Laundries

The movie “Philomena,” which opens this week and stars Judi Dench, tells the true story of an unwed, pregnant Irish girl who is sent off to a convent, where her baby is given up for adoption against her will. Years later, as an elderly woman, Philomena tries to find her son.
The convent where Philomena was sent was a “Magdalen Laundry,” one of many convents across Ireland where thousands of girls – pregnant out of wedlock or otherwise deemed morally wayward – were placed by the church or their families. At the laundries, the girls endured harsh, unpaid labor to make restitution for their sins.

The slaves of Magdalene

For decades, "bad" Irish girls were sent away to convent-run laundries, where they worked for no pay in awful conditions for years on end. Now, writes Jane Wheatley, survivors are finally getting compensation.
Martina Keogh was 16, selling newspapers outside a Dublin cinema, when a fight broke out on the street beside her. She was arrested along with the girls involved, sent to court and convicted of disorderly conduct. Her punishment would be two years' incarceration and unpaid labour in a convent laundry run by nuns.

MYTHS OF THE MAGDALENE LAUNDRIES

Prejudice, as the psychologist Gordon W. Allport stressed, is always an “unwarranted” attitude. If someone experiences severe discomfort by eating certain foods, there is nothing prejudicial about refusing to eat any more of them. But there is something prejudicial about making sweeping generalizations about an entire category of food, or a community of people, when one’s experiences are limited. One contemporary example of prejudice is the popular perception of the nuns who ran Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries.

Magdalene Laundries: Survivor stories

Maureen Sullivan, now 60, was sent to a Magdalene laundry in New Ross, County Wexford, at the age of 12.

Catholic nuns also abused children

So far, reports of abuse within the Church have focused almost exclusively on male clerics. But many young children also suffered at the hands of Catholic nuns.
In the late 1950s, the Roman Catholic Hospital of Our Dear Lady Mother of in Eindhoven was hell for Petra Jorissen. The reason had a name: sister Johanetty. "We will break that little will of yours, break it," she would squeal, as she forced the remains of a meal Jorissen had just thrown up back down her throat.

LCWR’s long-standing coverup of sexual abuse of children by nuns

The Dissenter’s Breviary, NCR, and the "magisterium of nuns", LCWR, are abusing the abuse crisis for their own ends. Have a look at the recent NCR piece, "Compromised hierarchy needs relational wisdom of women" by Charlene Spretnak.
Spretnak draws an opposition between the "patriarchal value system" of the "men’s club" and the "relational wisdom of women", which she says is exemplified, in part, by the "[harassed] communities of nuns" and by other women in the Catholic Church.

How the Irish Government protected the Catholic Church

Excerpt from David Yallop’s book, Beyond Belief: The Catholic Church and the Child Abuse Scandal (published by Constable in 2010). As of now, many people across the world would not allow an unaccompanied child to enter a Roman Catholic Church.
The spiritual cost, however, is far greater. Sexual abuse of any kind by a priest is an act that, not just physically, but spiritually is nothing less than the rape of a victim.

Abuse victims welcomed the report on the Dublin Archdiocese's mishandling of abuse complaints against its parish priests from 1975 to 2004. It followed a parallel report published in May into five decades of rape, beatings and other cruelty committed by Catholic orders of nuns and brothers nationwide in church-run schools, children's workhouses and orphanages from the 1930s to mid-1990s.

Catholic Church child abuse scandal: religion as a licence to prey

Ireland in the 20th Century: for countless small children, orphans alone in the world and children confined in special prisons for some petty crime against property or for bunking off school, life in institutions and schools run by Catholic priests and nuns was a childhood-long nightmare of violence at the hands of nuns, priests and Christian Brothers (a male, monklike, celibate, teaching order).

With One Eye Closed: Illegal Orphanages in Rural China

The state appreciates the crucial gap unregistered orphanages fill– until something goes wrong. In January of this year, The Huffington Post reported on a fire that killed six children and one young adult “at an illegally run orphanage in central China:”
“The deaths Friday in Henan province’s Lankao county have spotlighted China’s lack of government-run child services. They are often left to private citizens with few resources and no legal authority. The Lankao government earlier acknowledged that it had turned a blind eye to the illegal orphanage, which cared for abandoned children and young adults.…The deputy county governor said earlier that some departments had failed in supervision and should shoulder responsibility.”

An Irish Catholic orphanage hid the bodies of 800 children

They have no headstones, no coffins. No memory boxes of toys and photographs. There are nearly eight hundred of them – and counting. They are the 796 babies and young children aged between two days and nine years whose grave, “filled to the brim with tiny bones and skulls,” was found last week in an unmarked site that once housed a septic tank near a County Galway home for unwed mothers.

“We were girls in there, not women, just children really. Moreover, the girls in there cried every day. It was a prison. We didn’t see our families, we were locked in, cut off from life, deprived of a normal childhood.
“We were told we were there because we were bad people. Some of the girls had been raped at home and not believed. One girl was in because she had a bad hip and her family didn’t know what to do with her.

Sex Abuse by Nuns Alleged at Md. Protest

Four women and a man who say they are victims of child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic nuns held a news conference yesterday outside the Silver Spring headquarters of an organization of nuns to spotlight what they contend is an unrecognized problem.
"I'm here today because I'm concerned that in the midst of the sex abuse scandal about priests . . . people are not paying attention to the fact that people were sexually abused by nuns and sisters," said Mary Guentner, 46, a social worker from near Milwaukee who said she was sexually abused by a nun for four years, beginning in her senior year of high school.

A decade later, struggle for accountability within LCWR on abuse continues

Last week, we in the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests celebrated our 25th anniversary. This week, we take note of another, less positive milestone.
It's now been 10 years since we first began prodding the largest group of U.S. nuns to take action on abuse by women religious. It's been a frustrating and fruitless decade.

The Legacy of Church-run Mother and Baby Homes in Ireland

In the wake of the Ryan and Murphy reports*, both released in 2009, often the memories of the children, women and workers involved have taken a sideline to the question of who is to blame for systemic abuse. But while the Irish public attempts to heal from this broken past and demand justice, more stories are on the verge of disappearance: those of the unknown women and babies who lived in Church-run mother and baby homes and of the American families who adopted these children from the 1940s until the early 70s.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne's lawyer has given evidence to the child sex abuse royal commission that the Catholic Church knew of allegations Father Kevin O'Donnell was a paedophile as far back as 1958 but did nothing about it.
