My Book: They Promised Heaven But Led Me To Hell

My crime, in the eyes of the catholic church nuns, was that I was born ‘a bastard and a daughter of the devil. The punishments for my sins started when I was 18months old in the nursery by three ladies workers for the nuns which were repeated most nights up to the age of 5years old. My childhood was a life of abuse by nuns, the workers, older girls and a priest, the only way I could get through this was to be by myself or run away and hide, go and stay in the church and also climb as high as I could in the trees or jump the fences and hide in long grass. I also went to the police but that did me no good I was thrashed by the nuns when the police took me back to the orphanage...

Names of members of Catholic Church in Ireland convicted of child abuse published online

THE names of members of the Catholic Church in Ireland convicted of child abuse were published online yesterday. More than 70 names of priests and religious brothers convicted or named in abuse enquiries appeared on a database of the independent organisation, BishopAccountability.org. It said it believes that by making the list public it "makes children safer". It has also called on Pope Francis to release the names of all priests - including Irish ones - who have been disciplined by the Church for child sexual abuse.

Cardinal Wuerl target of rising anger after Pa. grand jury report

In the week since a Pennsylvania grand jury reported on child sex abuse by Catholic priests, Cardinal Donald Wuerl’s reputation has taken a brutal hit. Wuerl’s upcoming book has been canceled by the publisher, he abruptly pulled out of his role as keynote speaker at a major global meeting in Ireland, and officials are considering taking his name off a high school in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where Wuerl served as bishop for 18 years before becoming the archbishop of Washington in 2006. On Monday, a vandal got ahead of them — covering his name in red spray paint.

In full: Pope Francis' letter on child sex abuse and cover-ups

Pope Francis has issued a 2,000 word letter following a new report into clerical child sex abuse in the Catholic Church - here it is in full. Letter of His Holiness Pope Francis To the People of God "If one member suffers, all suffer together with it" (1 Cor 12:26). These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons. Crimes that inflict deep wounds of pain and powerlessness, primarily among the victims, but also in their family members and in the larger community of believers and nonbelievers alike.

The Latest: Archbishop says he didn't see misconduct letter

VATICAN CITY — The Latest on the clerical sex abuse scandal (all times local): 12:40 a.m. The archbishop of Boston says he didn't see a letter sent to his office in 2015 concerning another archbishop's possibly inappropriate behavior with seminarians. Cardinal Sean O'Malley said Monday the letter was about now ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, retired archbishop of Washington. Pope Francis ordered McCarrick removed from public ministry amid allegations he sexually abused a teenage altar boy and engaged in sexual misconduct with adult seminarians decades ago.

Pope apologizes for priest sex abuse scandal with 'sorrow and shame'

"We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them," the pope said in a letter that also condemned the abuse and the cover-up. Pope Francis begged for forgiveness in an unprecedented letter Monday and said Catholic leaders were to blame following a grand jury report last week that found more than 1,000 children were sexually abused by "predator priests" in Pennsylvania for decades. "With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives," Francis wrote. "We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them," he added.

Pope Francis responds to cover-up of child abuse by Catholic Church

Pope Francis compared the cover-up of widespread child abuse within the Catholic Church to ‘toilet filth’ as he used his first day in Ireland to meet with sexual abuse victims and pledged to eliminate the “scourge” of abuse. On early Saturday evening, Francis spent 90 minutes with eight survivors including those who had been abused by priests and those who suffered appalling treatment inside Catholic-run institutions. Among those included at the meeting was two people forcibly separated from their parents by a Church-run home. Clodagh Malone and Paul Redmond said the meeting had been “cordial and polite” and that Francis described abuse in the Church as “caca.”

US Not Alone In Grappling With Catholic Sex Abuse, Cover-Up

Recent revelations of sexual misconduct and cover-up within the highest ranks of the U.S. Catholic Church have revived the sense of betrayal that devastated the American church’s credibility after the first wave of scandal hit in 2002. But the United States is by no means alone: Cases of Catholic priests raping and molesting children, and of bishops covering up for them, have erupted on nearly every continent in recent years, with Pope Francis’ native Latin America the latest to explode. Francis is expected to address the issue head-on this weekend when he visits Ireland, the first country to come to grips with the problem in the 1990s.

The all-male priesthood finds itself in another scandal

As a Catholic priest, I did the unspeakable. I called for the ordination of women in the Church. The Vatican was swift in its response. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith informed me that I was “causing grave scandal” in the Church and that I had 30 days to recant my public support for the ordination of women or I would be expelled from the priesthood.

Under cover of goodness: How pillars of the community can prey on kids

Doctors, coaches, clergy. Society knows these as noble professions, filled with good people. Doctors heal. Coaches encourage athletic excellence. Priests usher people closer to God. Then there are Dr. Larry Nassar, Coach Jerry Sandusky and Father John Geoghan. Society knows them as monsters. Abuse in one of these vocations came to the fore of public consciousness just last week, when a grand jury detailed decades of allegations of child sex abuse by Catholic priests in Pennsylvania.

The Catholic church covered up abuse. Can RICO laws treat it like organized crime?

In 1970, Congress gifted prosecutors with the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, intended to give crime fighters a powerful weapon to take down organized crime. It became known as RICO, and at first, prosecutors were unsure what to make of it. Previously, they could go after members of criminal organizations for their individual crimes, but they didn’t have a tool for dismantling an organization dedicated to illicit activity. They were skeptical that the new law would fill that void.

New York seminary ‘had to hide handsome ones’ when McCarrick visited: Priests

In the early 1970s, Father Theodore McCarrick’s predilection for young men was allegedly so well known that members of a New York seminary joked they had to “hide the handsome ones” when he visited. More priests have come forward to give Catholic News Agency (CNA) this and other evidence of ex-Cardinal McCarrick’s reputation for inappropriate behavior towards seminarians and young priests. In addition, they have reported that a homosexual network of priests and seminarians are still active in contemporary Newark. Ted McCarrick served as the Archbishop of Newark from 1986 to 2000.

Former Lexington Bishop named in cover-up of Pennsylvania church abuse

A disturbing grand jury report out of Pennsylvania is hitting close to home for the Diocese of Lexington. The recent report involves hundreds of priests, and more than 1,000 victims of alleged sexual abuse in the Catholic church. The former leader of the Diocese of Lexington, Bishop Ronald Gainer, surfaced in the abuse findings, and is accused of asking the Vatican to protect two accused priests. "The efforts to protect the institution were widespread," explained Lexington Bishop John Stowe, who says he hasn't had recent contact with his predecessor.

Fox Valley priests are 'grieving' as they reckon with latest sex abuse scandal in Catholic Church

Early Sunday morning, before the 10:30 a.m. Mass, I sat down with my Sunday paper and read yet again about the scandal that just keeps giving — from sordid headlines to late-night jokes to massive mistrust among the faithful. And as I read these stories and editorials about the latest pedophilic priest cover-up in the Catholic Church — this one involving over 300 Pennsylvania clergy and 1,000 victims in a 70-year period according to a grand jury report in that state — I wondered if the priest would mention the scandal in the service I was about to attend.

Missouri and Kansas AGs must investigate sex abuse, cover-ups by Catholic clergy

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt must find a way to do something incredibly difficult and absolutely necessary. Justice requires it. And no one else can do it.

Pope Francis blasts 'atrocities' by clergy: 'We showed no care for the little ones'

Pope Francis condemned the "atrocities" of sexual abuse by priests and church leaders who covered up the crimes, apologising to the church community and demanding accountability from leaders in the future. The letter to the world's 1.2 billion Catholics was issued Monday (Tuesday NZT), less than a week after the latest in a long line of staggering abuse revelations. A withering grand jury report released by the Pennsylvania attorney general alleged that church leaders protected 301 "predator priests" in six dioceses across the state for decades at the expense of more than 1,000 victims.

Former N.J. priest joins regular protest at cathedral

A former priest from New Jersey joined a weekly protest in front of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston Sunday, issuing a challenge to Cardinal Sean O’Malley about an alleged cover-up of clerical sexual misconduct. After a Pennsylvania grand jury released a report Tuesday into seven decades of clerical sex abuse, the six protesters focused on Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington. McCarrick, who once practiced in New Jersey, was removed from the ministry in June and resigned in July amid reports that he had sexually assaulted minors and abused seminarians.

Abuse survivor wants local Catholic Church to 'name names'

Vancouver's Roman Catholic archbishop and a victims' advocate respond to revelations of abuse of children by priests Pennsylvania. The recent revelations that the Catholic Church covered up the abuse of close to 1,000 children by 300 priests over several decades in Pennsylvania has shaken survivors of church abuse in B.C., victims’ advocate Leona Huggins of Coquitlam said Sunday. “I got a call from a survivor this morning,” said Huggins, who was abused by a Vancouver priest when she was a child. Cardinal under fire over report on priest abuse 'is not telling the truth,' Pennsylvania AG says

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro is accusing Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, of "not telling the truth" as he attempts to defend himself amid criticism and calls for his resignation over the release of a Pennsylvania grand jury report detailing allegations of widespread predatory behavior by more than 300 priests against more than 1,000 children. The report is critical of Wuerl, who served as the bishop of Pittsburgh for 18 years, from 1988 to 2006, and describes him as one of the bishops who helped cover up abusive behavior.

Why this Catholic Church abuse scandal is worse than 2002's

CNN) — This is how bad things are in the Catholic Church right now: The Pope's top adviser on clergy sexual abuse canceled a trip to Ireland for a papal event because he has to investigate sexual misconduct in his own seminary. And Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston, president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, isn't alone. Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, another key papal ally embroiled in the sex abuse crisis, has also canceled his appearance at next week's World Meeting of Families, a spokesman told CNN. Consider the litany of recent incidents in the Catholic Church:

Brother blamed for death

The spotlight on sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is widening to include fresh allegations against the Christian Brothers in Dunedin. An ODT Insight investigation, as part of the ongoing "Marked by the Cross" series, has uncovered allegations of historic sexual abuse, dating back to the 1970s, levelled against two Christian Brothers. A Dunedin mother, speaking on condition of anonymity, said she blamed her son’s suicide on the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of one of the men, Br Desmond Fay, in the 1970s.

Catholics consider withholding donations amid sex abuse scandals

For decades, Michael Drweiga has opened his wallet whenever the donation basket comes around at church, but the latest revelations of priests sexually abusing children brought him to the conclusion that he can no longer justify giving. Brice Sokolowski helps small Catholic nonprofits and churches raise money, but he too supports the recent calls to withhold donations. And Georgene Sorensen has felt enough anger and “just total sadness” over the past few weeks that she’s reconsidering her weekly offering at her parish.

Opinion Our View: We failed to protect our children

There seemed little doubt that the 18-month grand jury investigation into sexual abuse claims against Catholic priests in Pennsylvania would produce some disturbing findings. But the nearly 1,400-page report released Tuesday was more appalling and far more damning than most could have imagined. The report, which was released after ongoing legal challenges by the Catholic church to block it, detailed claims of abuse at the hands of more than 300 priests over seven decades. The investigation identified nearly 1,000 children who were victims, but noted that there were probably thousands more.

We owe Sinead O’Connor an apology - she spoke the truth about church child abuse

Following the shocking revelations of 70 years of abuse of children by Pennsylvania priests, we owe Sinead O’Connor an apology. Her declaration back in 1992 that the Catholic Church was rotten to its core and pedophile priests and their enablers were the real enemy was true. It caused a massive worldwide reaction when she tore up a picture of the then Pope on Saturday Night Live in October 1992 and declared, “Fight the real enemy.” We now know that the pedophile scandals were rampant during the era of Pope John Paul, who chose to turn a blind eye. O’Connor was calling out the right person.

Charlotte bishops call reports of Pennsylvania priests molesting thousands of kids 'shameful'

The report came two months after Pope Francis ordered disgraced ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick removed from public ministry amid allegations the 88-year-old retired archbishop sexually abused a teenage altar boy and engaged in sexual misconduct with adult seminarians decades ago. Last month, Francis accepted McCarrick's resignation as cardinal and ordered him to a "life of prayer and penance." David Hains, spokesman for the Charlotte Diocese, said the report found huge problems that need to be fixed. “It's a betrayal when the leaders are literally preaching one thing and then acting in another way,” Hains said. “It's just wrong.”

Camden Bishop Sullivan: I am 'ashamed and disgusted' by clergy sex abuse in grand jury report

Days after a searing grand jury report revealed widespread sexual abuse and cover-up by Catholic clergy members in six Pennsylvania dioceses, Camden Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan on Sunday called the report “painful” and an “important reminder of shameful past failings in the church — including in our own diocese.” “I am ashamed and disgusted by the past actions of some bishops and priests,” Sullivan said in a letter issued Sunday, which was scheduled to be read in all Camden parishes over the weekend at vigil and Sunday Masses. “… Of all the places that we expect that our children would be safe, it is within our churches, schools and institutions. The fact that the church, in the past, failed in this most fundamental obligation is heartbreaking.”

Excerpts from the grand jury report on child sex abuse in 6 Pennsylvania Roman Catholic dioceses

We heard the testimony of dozens of witnesses concerning clergy sex abuse. We subpoenaed, and reviewed, half a million pages of internal diocesan documents. They contained credible allegations against over three hundred predator priests. Over one thousand child victims were identifiable, from the church’s own records. We believe that the real number — of children whose records were lost, or who were afraid ever to come forward — is in the thousands. Most of the victims were boys; but there were girls too. Some were teens; many were prepubescent. ... All of them were brushed aside, in every part of the state, by church leaders who preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all.

Survey: Crisis of Gay Men Plagues Priesthood, Seminaries

Faithful Catholics recognize that the decades-long sex abuse crisis (the McCarrick scandal being just the latest chapter) of minors, seminarians and young priests is rooted in homosexuality. This understanding is backed by evidence: Multiple studies confirm clerical sex abuse is a crisis not of pedophilia but of homosexuality. In a 2017 report on the clerical sex abuse crisis, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) found that "Eighty-one percent of the victims were male," and when the age of the victim was determined, only "one in ten were under age ten." The report further confirmed that these findings were "similar to those reported for year 2015."

Catholic Church in NZ 'failed in a very serious way' over paedophile priest: call for royal commission

The Catholic Church's handling of a paedophile priest from Dunedin amounts to ''negligence'', and a royal commission could reveal a cover-up, the head of the University of Otago's theology and public issues centre says. And an international expert on clerical sex abuse now believes Father Magnus Murray may have been offending for 50 years, and "almost certainly has dozens of victims". The comments came after ODT Insight yesterday revealed how Murray was allowed to continue as a priest after his offending in Dunedin was revealed to Bishop John Kavanagh in 1972.

Medieval reform, doctor of the Church, can help current sex abuse crisis, historian says

VATICAN – A radical program of reform addressing the widespread problem of abusive clergy and negligent superiors in the 11th century holds some essential insights and lessons for the church today, a church historian has said. St. Peter Damian – honoured by Pope Leo XII in 1828 as a doctor of the church for his reform efforts – came up with an effective strategy that emphasized the need for public accountability, strict penalties for offenders and their superiors, and the obligation of laypeople to step in when church leaders fail to reform themselves, said C. Colt Anderson, a theologian and expert in church reformers.

The fallen father: Church sex abuse in NZ 'still not exposed' - expert

An internationally-renowned expert on clerical sex abuse believes its extent in New Zealand has not yet been exposed. Emeritus Professor Desmond Cahill, of RMIT University in Melbourne, also criticised the Government for not extending the terms of reference of its historical inquiry into abuse in state care homes to include religious institutions. Cahill was a senior consultant on clerical sex abuse in the Catholic Church for the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which referred 2575 abuse cases to the authorities. It released its final report in December last year.

Opinion: Massena woman says do not be silent through fear

I attended the Survivors Network of Abuse by Priests conference In Chicago July 5 to 8.
I have been a contributing member of SNAP the last two years. It was wonderful to see so many courageous survivors sharing what they had suffered at the hands of the Catholic Church hierarchy and priests. Those at the conference are dedicated to saving other children and adults from the same fate. The Catholic Hierarchy have for centuries lust let the abused suffer with no compassion or help. In fact they have lied and because of those lies, millions of lives have been destroyed, many by suicide, drugs, alcohol or other self-inflicted wounds. Those abusers were often transferred to other parishes or left for years to repeat the abuse. The victims, children or adults, had to stay quiet because of threats against them or their families, or because the trauma was too much for them to handle. Many abusers were sent to therapy and we parishioners paid millions to help something that couldn’t be cured, while families struggled to help their loved ones.

Renewed calls for church to be part of Royal Commission

A paedophile priest who left a trail of victims in his wake was allowed to continue as a man of the cloth for nearly two decades after his offending was revealed to the Bishop of Dunedin. Survivors say it shows why the Catholic Church should be part of a Royal Commission into historic abuse. Chris Morris investigates. Victims of a paedophile priest in Dunedin are renewing calls for a Royal Commission into historic abuse to include churches, amid suggestions their abuser's eventual prosecution revealed only the tip of an iceberg.
