MoD admits over 350 sexual abuse complaints have been made by cadets

More than 350 complaints of sexual abuse perpetrated against members of Britain’s cadet forces have been made in the past five years, the Ministry of Defence has said, as reports emerged that some cases were covered up by the authorities.
Figures released by the MoD show that, of the 363 claims lodged between 2012 and 2017, 282 were referred to the police. The allegations also led to the dismissal of 99 instructors across the three cadet branches: army, air and sea, as Whitehall paid out more than £2m in compensation to the survivors.

Sex abuse was covered up at cadet forces, Panorama finds

BBC Panorama has uncovered evidence of repeated cover-ups of historical sex abuse in Britain's cadet forces.
Victims have spoken for the first time of senior cadet leaders covering up complaints, and pressurising families against going to the police. Overseen by the Ministry of Defence, the cadets is one of the UK's largest youth bodies with 130,000 members.

Jersey care abuse inquiry: Children 'still at risk'

Children may still be at risk in Jersey's care system, a report into seven decades of child abuse has found. Live electrical wires were applied to children's legs, one survivor told the The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry.
Victims also reported being beaten with nettles, having their heads dunked in cold water and being sexually abused. The States of Jersey had "proved to be an ineffectual and neglectful substitute parent", the report said.

Lawsuit accuses O.C. priest of sexually assaulting his assistant at Irvine church

A senior Roman Catholic priest in the Diocese of Orange sexually assaulted and harassed a female church employee last year at a prominent Irvine parish where he was placed despite a similar prior accusation, according to a lawsuit filed by the woman.
Father Alex Kim is accused by his former assistant of sexually assaulting her several times at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. She alleged in the suit that she felt compelled to take a leave of absence to avoid his attacks.

German commissioner urges Cardinal Müller to apologise over Regensburg choir scandal

An investigation found at least 547 former members of the Regensburg Domspatzen boys choir were subjected to some form of abuse
Cardinal Gerhard Müller has been strongly criticised by an investigation into abuse at the Regensburg choir school.
More than 500 boys suffered abuse at the hands of dozens of teachers and priests at the school that trains the prestigious boys’ choir of the Regensburg Cathedral in Germany, said an independent investigator.

Catholic parishes to pay higher fees

To help Guam's Catholic Church correct past financial mismanagement, pay debts and properly fund chancery operations, village parishes will see an average of 186-percent increases in assessment fees.
This means up to a 1,146-percent hike for the Maina parish, for example, which used to pay only $107.82, church data shows. The Dededo parish, the biggest, will be assessed $10,763.45 instead of the $5,481.26 imposed six years ago, or an increase of 96 percent.

How the domestic violence research can help the church

You might have got totally different impressions of how the church responds to domestic violence depending on your media choices this week.
On the ABC, journalist Julia Baird presented a number of reports (here, here and here), that emphasised a statistic – that US research shows that “sporadic” attenders of churches are more likely to engage in domestic violence than the general community. Then News Corp’s Andrew Bolt in the Herald Sun and on Sky News pointed to a key finding from the same research which shows that regular attenders at church are much less likely to be involved in domestic violence. (Karl Faase in Eternity had reported that good news story back in 2015.) To be fair, Baird also reported that statistic but much less prominently.

Church has learned very little in the 20 years since evil Fr Brendan Smyth died, says victim

Smyth was jailed for more than 140 offences in 1994, dying of a heart attack behind bars on August 22, 1997.
Brendan Boland was abused by the twisted cleric for two years, starting from when he was an 11-year-old altar boy serving in his home parish in Dundalk, Co Louth.
In 1975, when Mr Boland was 14, he reported Smyth's abuse of him and other children but was forced to sign a confidentiality agreement that prevented him from speaking about it to anyone.

Pope's treasurer faces sex abuse charges in Australia, a grim reminder for his home

By Byron Kaye BALLARAT, Australia (Reuters) - One of the pope's top advisers, Cardinal George Pell, makes his first court appearance in Australia this week on charges of historic sex crimes, a bitter reminder for his home town reeling from more than a dozen abuse cases.
Pell, the Vatican's economy minister, last month became the most senior Catholic to be charged with sex crimes. He has vowed to fight the still-unspecified charges, calling them false and the result of a "relentless character assassination". He declined to respond to interview requests for this story. He is expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. Police have not released details of the charges, but the start of Pell's court battle in Melbourne revisits a troubled past for Ballarat, the former gold town of 100,000 people 75 miles (120 km) to the west where Pell grew up and cut his teeth as a priest in the 1970s and 1980s.

Pope Francis remains too tolerant of abuse

Pope Francis, who pledged a policy of “zero tolerance” for sexually abusive clergy in the Catholic Church, has turned out to be all too tolerant. Jersey's care homes decades of abuse examined in report

Decades of slavery, bullying and abuse have been revealed in a report into the care system in Jersey. Victims reported hundreds of alleged offences of physical, emotional or sexual abuse.
The police investigation began in 2006 but the apparent discovery in 2008 of part of a child's skull at a care home made headlines around the world.  It was later found to be coconut shell, but hundreds of victims had by then come forward.

Child sex abuse of cadets covered - up in scandal likened to Jimmy Savile case

Historic child sex abuse in Britain's cadet forces was repeatedly kept quiet by senior leaders in a cover up likened to the Jimmy Savile and Catholic Church scandals, an investigation has found.

Spike in suicides among Irish Catholic priests reported amid low morale over decline and abuse scandals

At least eight priests in Ireland have committed suicide in the past 10 years, according to recent reports given at meetings of the Association of Catholic Priests (ACP).
The alarming figure comes as the Catholic News Agency (CNA) reports on a severe dip in morale and a mental health crisis among Irish clergy, caused by abuse allegations and declining numbers being ordained as well as other factors.  This has sparked calls for a confidential helpline to be set up for priests needing support.

Priest lashes out at Pell over new Rome guest house

Pell should sell this mansion in Rome to pay for his court case... the people should be paying for him... Ann
 =============================
A LEADING Melbourne priest has criticised Cardinal George Pell for reserving a ''grand apartment'' for himself at the Australian church's new guest house in Rome, saying ''the ethics of our secular state are higher than those of our church''.
Father Eric Hodgens, an elder statesmen among the clergy, also savaged Australia's Catholic bishops for an abject performance during their five-yearly visit to Rome last month, particularly in failing to stand up for Bill Morris, sacked earlier this year as Bishop of Toowoomba.

Archbishop: Year of prayer for victims of clergy abuses, violence, other social ills

Archbishop Michael Jude Byrnes has declared a "Year of Reparation" for the Catholic Church on Guam because of the magnitude of clergy sexual abuses and outbreaks of violence, child abuse, drug abuse and the highest divorce rate in the world, among other things.
"(Reparation) is a way of restoring the balance of justice when people have been harmed," Byrnes said during his monthly "Updating the Faithful" series Wednesday morning.  Byrnes said declaring a Year of Reparation, which will begin July 6, signifies solidarity with all victims of social ills, including clergy abuse and violence, and a collective quest for justice.

Letter from Rome Cardinal Pell’s Out. Now What?

Cardinal George Pell’s time at the Vatican is over. You can bet the Holy See’s huge financial and real estate assets that, de facto, he is finished as Prefect of the Secretariat of the Economy, the office that monitors those vast resources.
Pope Francis granted Pell an extended “leave” from his Vatican post this past Wednesday so the cardinal could return to his native Australia and face “multiple charges in respect of historic sexual abuse.”

Cardinal George Pell said to parents of abuse victims: “It’s all gossip until it’s proven in court”

In 1997 Cardinal George Pell said to the parents of abuse victims who were whistleblowing on 5 paedophile priests: “We won’t believe any of this. It’s all gossip until it’s proven in court”. It’s one of many examples of George Pell covering up for paedophile priests over many years with some saying he was involved in the cover-ups as far back at the 1970’s. So, it no surprise that Cardinal Pell himself has been charged.
George Pell is about to see firsthand if paedophile allegations can be proven in court given the charges laid against him by the Victoria police on Thursday 29/6/17. What exactly George Pell has been charged with I don’t know other thanmultiple historical sexual offencesas announced by the police as per their press release below. But there are previous claims that he sexually abused 3 boys and claims in the recently published book “Cardinal: The Rise and Fall Of George Pell” that George Pell forced 2 boys to give him oral sex in the 1990’s.

'No special treatment': Court confirms Cardinal George Pell will face justice next to bikies and murderers when he fights sex charges flanked by Australia's top defence lawyer

The Vatican's third most powerful figure will receive no special treatment when he appears in court to face multiple historical sex charges.
There have been fears for the safety of Australia's most powerful Catholic at his court appearance on July 26, as sexual abuse survivors are expected to attend.  Melbourne Magistrates Court appears unconcerned, and stated that Cardinal George Pell's trial will be 'business as usual.

Catholic Church's hierarchy makes punishing sexual abuse difficult

Cardinal George Pell, a top adviser to Pope Francis, returned to his native Australia July 10 to face criminal charges related to sexual assault. While the specific allegations and names of the accusers have not been made public, Cardinal Pell maintains that he has been a victim of “character assassination.” His case will be decided by an Australian court.
This is not the first time the Catholic Church has been rocked by charges of sexual abuse. While reforms in the Catholic Church in the United States have made it mandatory for priests to report instances of sexual abuse, there still remains much work to be done in the Catholic Church worldwide.

No justice for a life destroyed

Victims of historic abuse in state care are fighting back, demanding justice - in cash and apologies - to help rebuild broken lives. But some are going further.
In the second part of ODT Insight’s special investigation, Chris Morris tells Darryl Smith’s story. Darryl Smith says ''blood money'' is not enough to rebuild a life destroyed by sexual abuse in two countries.

St John of God response

The Brothers Hospitallers of St John of God do not want to talk about abuse victim Darryl Smith.
The Catholic order's Australian head, provincial Brother Timothy Graham, declined to comment when contacted by ODT Insight.  He referred questions to the order's law firm, which said it would be ''inappropriate'' to comment while discussions with Mr Smith's lawyers continued.

'Submit to your husbands': Women told to endure domestic violence in the name of God

The ABC today steps up its war on Christianity, falsely claiming the men most likely to abuse women are Evangelical Christians "who go to church sporadically".

Vulnerable New Zealand children were failed by the church and state, an official says.

New Zealand's most vulnerable children were failed by Church and State, the head of the Catholic Church's National Office for Professional Standards says.
Bill Kilgallon told ODT Insight the Church's New Zealand office, created in 2004 to investigate historic abuse claims, had fielded about 22 complaints a year since 2013. Trace: Witness saw paedophile priest covered in blood near cold case murder victim Maria James' house

A priest who sexually abused the son of cold case murder victim Maria James was seen covered in blood on the day of her murder, metres from the crime scene.
The priest — identified as Father Anthony Bongiorno — had blood on his face and arm as he ran into St Mary's Parish Thornbury, roughly 50 metres from the Melbourne bookshop and home where Maria was stabbed 68 times in 1980.  The ABC's Trace podcast, which has been reinvestigating the case for the past year, tracked down an electrician who was conducting maintenance work in the grounds of St Mary's Parish on June 17, 1980 — the day of Maria's murder.

Hunter region can take credit for helping break the silence of the Catholic Church

FOR nearly 2000 years Christianity has been one of the world’s most powerful movements, starting as a single voice preaching peace to the might of the Roman empire.
And so it is fitting, in 2017, to acknowledge the many single voices that have spoken against the might of Rome – this time the seat of Christianity in the Catholic Church – as one of the church’s most senior members is charged with child sex offences.

A way the church shields sex offenders

I subscribe to the Marshall Project, a criminal justice reporting project. The June 22 "pick of the day's criminal justice news" included this bit:
Lawmakers in New York once again fail to pass legislation that would extend the statute of limitations on childhood sex abuse. The Child Victims Act had deep-pocketed opposition from the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts of America. The church and the Boy Scouts acted to prevent sex offenses from coming to light. Well, I'm guessing "the Church" here refers to some Catholic bishops, not the whole church. They are protecting priests and troop leaders who have violated children by silencing the accusers. And the bishops (I don't know what the Boy Scouts do) compensate by challenging the behavior of women and girls.

As Anglicans point fingers in sex abuse scandal, George Carey quits honorary role

In a dramatic coda to a dark chapter in the Church of England, former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord George Carey stepped down from an honorary role after a report on child sex abuse accused the church under his leadership of collusion.
Carey resigned after current Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby made the unprecedented decision to ask him to step aside from his post as honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Oxford, a position often given to retired senior clergy.

Letter: Victims of past sexual abuse may get justice

And yet another disgraceful legislative session comes to an end in Albany without action on the Child Victims Act. Even more disgraceful is the fact that our four elected senators George Amedore, John Bonacic, Bill Larkin and James Seward refuse to provide any information on where they stand regarding this important bill. Your article on June 25 entitled “The Fray” does, however, provide a glimmer of hope to those victims of child abuse, regarding a proposed alternative bill which would remove entirely the statute of limitations regarding prosecutions of sexual predators.

Cardinal who is third highest figure in Catholic Church is ordered to leave Rome and appear in Australian court over historic claims.

British author challenges dubia cardinals, calls abuse of Pope ‘satanic’

Stephen Walford, a British Catholic author, has challenged the four cardinals who submitted doubts about 'Amoris Laetitita' to Pope Francis to change course, arguing they're largely wrong on the merits and also fueling a 'satanic' form of abuse directed at the pontiff on traditionalist and conservative websites and blogs.

Senior Catholic Church officials have rarely faced charges in the sexual abuse of children. Here are a few who did

Unless you have been a victim of childhood sexual abuse it is difficult for people to understand the often life-long impact that it can have. Survivors suffer low self-esteem, guilt, shame and often have mental health problems which can lead to addiction and even suicide.
When that abuse is committed by a priest, it is compounded by the abuse of power as well as being linked to the victim's faith. This often leaves survivors conflicted and more vulnerable to being exploited by church authorities who seem to be prone to forgiving the abusers and blaming the victims.

Just what the Catholic Church needs: another sex scandal

Sadly, the Roman #Catholic Church is no stranger to scandal, a shadow that has cast an indelible smear across its dwindling charisma in the past 30 years. There was once a time when it was above reproach, no matter the murky doings that went on behind closed doors, but no longer held in the grip of religious fear that kept their parents and grandparents quiet, the younger victims of abuse are opening up.

Conservative Christianity Has Enabled Pedophiles for Untold Decades

Stop me if you've heard this before: A deeply religious man, beloved by his church/community, targets and grooms a young child for sexual abuse. The child tells an adult and they report it to the elders of the church. The church investigates the abuse and then sweeps it all under the rug. The deeply religious man is never reported to the police, the victim is blamed for seducing the man, and the man goes on to molest many other children, leaving a trail of scarred families in his wake.

Gough Whitlam and how Australia facilitated a child sexual abuse crisis

GOUGH Whitlam wrote a letter to Pope Benedict XVI in October, 2012, nearly four decades after his government granted formal diplomatic recognition to the Vatican, and only weeks before another Labor prime minister, Julia Gillard, established a royal commission that would expose the extent of child sexual abuse within the Australian Catholic Church.
Diplomatic relations with the Vatican from 1973 was a “memorable and significant initiative” of his government, Whitlam told the Pope. The relationship was one “which has always been maintained with deep mutual respect and consideration”.
