The Archdiocese of Chicago is using proceeds from its cemetery system to help pay down its sizable settlement debt from clergy sexual abuse, a new report says. The Chicago archdiocese currently owes roughly $200 million from sex abuse settlements and other related costs, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, and for years it has used loans or sold property to meet those costs.

Mom of abused son rebukes bishop for making pro-gay priest ‘spiritual guide’ for abuse victims

ATLANTA, Georgia, August 30, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – The Catholic mother of a survivor of abuse within the Atlanta archdiocese has penned a letter to Archbishop Wilton Gregory to let him know the heartbreak he has caused her and the "disgust" she feels by appointing a homosexual-affirming priest as “spiritual guide” for victims of sexual abuse in the archdiocese. LifeSiteNews detailed in an August 14 report how Gregory had appointed Msgr. Henry Gracz as archdiocesan “Spiritual Director for Victims.” Gracz is pastor of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Atlanta, which has long held the reputation within the archdiocese as being the “gay parish.” As Pastor, Gracz oversees ongoing LGBT-affirming initiatives by the parish.

Pressure drops as empty seats greet Cardinal George Pell's latest day in court

The steam had begun to escape from this Melbourne courtroom sensation. Less than three months ago George Pell, Prince of the Catholic Church, had barely been able to make his way up the street and through the doors of the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
Crowds had roiled around him, cameras were shoved in his face, invective was thrown at him from one side, cheers from the other and placards were hoisted.

> US church leaders helping many find healing as victims of clergy sexual abuse, but more to be done, finds audit

Church leaders not to assume that 'sexual abuse of minors by the clergy is a thing of the past and a distant memory'. The 14th annual report on diocesan compliance with the US Catholic Church's "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People" shows that church leaders have taken steps to help many find healing as victims of clergy sexual abuse, but there is still work to be done.
Introductory remarks in the 2017 report urge church leaders not to assume that "sexual abuse of minors by the clergy is a thing of the past and a distant memory. Any allegation involving a current minor should remind the bishops that they must rededicate themselves each day to maintaining a level of vigilance," wrote Francesco Cesareo, chairman of the National Review Board, which oversees the audits.

Parent speaks out about priest’s abuse Father of child abused by Oaxaca priest say the families are victims as well

The father of one of the children in the eight documented cases of pedophilia committed by a priest in Oaxaca has spoken out about the forgotten victims of the crime: the relatives of the abused child.
Pedro Mendoza, whose son was allegedly a victim of Catholic priest Gerardo Silvestre, says he and his wife suffered along with their son when the crime was uncovered.
“The suffering continues, and now includes our other children. It is a chain, and sadly the seed planted by the sexual abuse has taken root,” he said.

Woman escapes grave dug by fiance

Stacey Gwilliam dropped to her knees as the man she loved clenched his arm around her neck. Then everything went black. When she next opened her eyes she "felt like I was buried in a grave".
She was.
Gwilliam told her terrifying story of being buried alive to Wales Online, after her fiance, bodybuilder Keith Hughes, first choked her until she blacked out and then hid her body beneath a pile of foliage. Hughes, 39, was this week found guilty of attempted murder. He will be sentenced on Friday.

Santa Fe Archbishop: 'Spotlight' to bring up 'horrific' past

In this June 10, 2015 file photo, Archbishop John Wester, of Santa Fe, participates in a news conference during the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Spring General Assembly in St. Louis. Wester says the upcoming release of a movie detailing the Boston Globe's 2002 investigation into the church's cover-up of clergy abuse may bring up "horrific memories" for New Mexico victims. In a recent letter to Archdiocese of Santa Fe priests and parishioners, Wester says the movie "Spotlight" is a chance for the faithful to pray for abuse victims.

The many trials of Cardinal George Pell

As Cardinal Pell prepares for another child sex abuse hearing, his ‘company man’ style has made him enemies within the Vatican.  The coincidence could hardly be more unfortunate, but it could not have been foreseen. Back in March, on the second anniversary of his pontificate, Pope Francis announced a year to be dedicated to the major theme of his papacy, mercy.
The Year of Mercy, he announced, will begin on the day the church calls the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8.

Letter to Pope Francis from deaf survivors of St. John’s School on behalf of the 575 survivors in the Milwaukee Archdiocese Bankruptcy.

Dear Pope Francis,
We are writing to you as deaf survivors of childhood sexual assault by Father Lawrence Murphy who operated for decades St. John’s School for the Deaf in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.  As far as we know, in the mid 1970’s we were the first victims of these crimes to publicly come forward anywhere in the world.
We did so very reluctantly and only after learning that the Milwaukee Archdiocese, with the likely knowledge and advice of Vatican officials, was continuing to cover up the crimes of Fr. Murphy and leave deaf children at risk.

Former St Paul’s student says after he revealed he had been sexually abused by a paedophile music teacher, Phillip Aspinall ‘attempted to bamboozle and intimidate me into submissive retreat’
The Anglican archbishop of Brisbane, Phillip Aspinall, allegedly told a paedophile music tutor’s victim to turn away from his “sinful path” of pursuing legal action against the church. The royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse continued hearings on Monday into the experiences of former students and staff responses at two prestigious Brisbane schools.

Church Spent Decades Stealing or Coercing Babies from Unwed Mothers

Ever the bastion of mercy and forgiveness for wayward women, Catholic church-run charities around the world stand accused of forcing unwed mothers to give up their babies for adoption — or lying and telling them their babies had died and then giving the babies away, anyway.
Depressingly, Operation Hand The Baby Over, You Hellbound Adultress wasn't a relic of Torquemada-era moralizing; the most recent cases of forced or coerced adoption are said to have occurred in the late 1980's. And punitive tactics used on pregnant women then sound oddly like language used in laws designed to be abortion deterrents today.

Native Affairs – Two million dollar kid – Part 1 New Zealand Child Abuse

Daryl Brougham used to be called the 2 million dollar kid, because that's what his 18 years in State Care cost the New Zealand taxpayer.  While in CYF care, Daryl suffered significant amounts of abuse and neglect.
This year the Ministry of Social Development owned up to some of the litany of mistakes made that contributed to his lost childhood. Up until a few weeks ago the 35 year-old had a job with Child Youth and Family. Daryl's now resigned, and tonight tells his story and speaks out about a broken system for the 5000 children he says have no voice. Here's Ruwani Perera with this 2-part exclusive report.

St. Joseph High School officials failed to report convicted student's sexual misconduct

The criminal case against Shane Villalpando concluded in 2013, but now officials at St. Joseph High School—Villalpando’s former high school—are the targets of a lawsuit surrounding the former student’s behavior at the time.
Filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in November 2014, the lawsuit alleges that administrators at the high school failed to report Villalpando’s “sexually deviant behavior and dangerous propensities” leading up to the alleged rape of a female St. Joseph student that occurred in June 2011.

Priest Who Called Homosexuality “A Sickness” And Blamed Children For Pedophilia Dismissed From Church

Father Gino Flaim, an Italian priest, has outraged and humiliated Catholic Church officials by saying he understands why priests “succumb” to urges to sexually abuse children, and by deeming homosexuality “a sickness,”
A priest for nearly half a decade, 75-year-old Father Flaim suggested that children are sometimes to blame, as they tempt priests into sexual relationships: “I can understand pedophilia,” he told La7, an Italian television channel. “I’ve been in lots of schools and I know children. Unfortunately there are some children who look for affection because they don’t get it at home. And perhaps if they find a priest (in whom to confide)… he might succumb. And I understand this.”

US sex victims say Church remains obstacle to justice

Mark Rozzi says he was 13, a young altar boy, when a priest at his eastern Pennsylvania parish sexually assaulted him in a shower. It took Rozzi, who says the priest spent a year grooming him with trips to McDonald’s and secretly shared beers, a quarter of a century to talk about the experience publicly. By then it was too late for any legal action.
Now a 44-year-old Pennsylvania state representative, Rozzi is a driving force behind one of about a dozen Bills making their way through legislatures in states including New York and New Jersey that aim to give child sex assault victims more time to sue their attackers.

Survivors of Clergy Abuse Call for Bishops Resignation

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Syracuse spent part of the weekend apologizing for comments he made in 2011 about clergy abuse victims. In a sworn deposition, Bishop Robert Cunningham suggested molestation victims who were abused by priests are partly to blame for what happened to them.
The Syracuse Diocese then issued a statement from the bishop saying his words gave the wrong impression and now some survivors of abuse are calling for Cunningham to step down from his post as leader of central New York's Catholics.

Cardinal George Pell scheme ‘discouraged abuse reporting’: Royal Commission report

This shows that PELL... did know about the rape of children... boys and girls in Australia... see how they can keep a straight face...  but then we did hear him stutter... for all to see and hear... right throughout his time... in front of the Royal Commissioner... his lies will soon catch him out... if they have not yet...
===================
CONTROVERSIAL scheme introduced by George Pell to deal with complaints of sexual abuse actually discouraged victims from going to police, the child abuse Royal Commission has found.
In a major blow for Melbourne’s Catholic Archdiocese, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse today released its report into Cardinal Pell’s Melbourne Response.

Syracuse bishop's sex-abuse deposition disservice to victims, priests (Your letters)

To the Editor: Each week, during Mass, we pray for our bishop, Bishop Robert Cunningham, and all the leaders of the church.
Apparently, according to the headlines in the Sunday Post-Standard, "Bishop: Priests' Victims Share Blame", it appears that our prayers concerning Bishop Cunningham have not yet reached their recipient.
