 Pope Francis told gossip-loving priests and nuns to bite their tongues on Monday, and warned those breaking their vow of obedience to fall into line sharpish.
"If you get an urge to say something against a brother or a sister, to drop a gossip bomb, bite your tongue! Hard!" the pontiff said in an improvised speech to members of the clergy marking the end of the Year of Consecrated Life.

Jehovah’s Witnesses fight law on reporting child sex abuse to police

In 2013, 30-something Katheryn Harris Carmean White confessed to elders in her Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation that she had repeatedly had sex with a 14-year-old boy.
The two elders didn’t tell police. They, and the congregation, now face a lawsuit from the Delaware attorney general accusing them of violating the state’s mandated reporting laws. The defendants claim the elders were protected from having to report the abuse by a legal exemption for clergy.

Abuse in the spotlight

Recent films cast a glaring light on the Catholic Church’s pedophile priests. They make the Vatican’s response seem too little, too late.  Mark Ruffalo is good at looking bothered. On and off camera, the twitchy American actor often wears an expression of distaste, like he just caught a whiff of sour milk.

As a Boston Globe reporter investigating child molesters in Spotlight, Ruffalo has plenty to work with. Lurking at the back of a church, observing a group of boys rehearsing Silent Night, trying to fathom how a man of God could prey on innocent children, he screws his face into a rictus of disgust. Eugh.

In a ten-year span, the Catholic Church defrocked 848 priests who committed sex crimes all over the world.  In just about half that time, nearly 1,000 American police officers have lost their badges for sex crimes and that doesn't even include officers from New York or California — the states with the two largest police departments in the country.

There remain doubts over whether Cardinal George Pell will return to Australia next month to give testimony to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, after he failed to travel to the United States this week for a speaking engagement.
Australia's highest-profile Catholic, who is based in Rome where he manages the Vatican's finances, previously cancelled a planned trip to Melbourne in December to give evidence to the commission due to a "worsening" heart condition.

Hold court hearings in Leifer’s home’

Israeli judges are being urged to kickstart proceedings to extradite alleged sexual abuser Malka Leifer to Australia by setting up a courtroom in her home.
Australian authorities are attempting to bring the former head teacher of the Adass Israel School back to the country to face charges of assaulting a number of students. In all, Leifer is wanted in connection with 74 counts of assault. She fled to Israel in March 2008 after claims she molested students became public.

TWO convicted child sex offenders told a royal commission they denied sharing boys or that there was a paedophile ring inside the Anglican Church.
Former Anglican priests Garth Hawkins and Louis Daniels told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse they did not discuss their predilection for young boys with other priests.

Three priests assigned to Mercer Island abused children over decades

Three priests who served in Mercer Island and were accused of sexually abusing children over nearly three decades were among the names on a list recently released by the Archdiocese of Seattle as part of their self-proclaimed commitment to transparency.
“This is an ongoing effort for us. The disclosure of this list was determined to be a step that would contribute to our accountability and transparency,” said Greg Magnoni, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Seattle.

‘Spotlight’: Good-old journalism uncovers systemic corruption

Even though director Todd McCarthy's previous Adam Sandler film “The Cobbler” can be considered as dismissible, there is nothing to dismiss about “Spotlight” -- one of the year's most noteworthy Oscar contenders and a brilliant ensemble piece, which opened in Turkish cinemas on Jan. 29.
The story takes place only 15 years ago, on the brink of the millennium, yet still it feels like a period piece instigating a specific kind of nostalgia -- that of the yearning for a time when printed daily newspapers had not yet tanked and investigative journalism was still considered one of the most privileged and respected jobs. Today, at least in Turkey, those who dare investigate are likely to be transported to jail, i.e., Can Dündar and Erdem Gül of Turkey's oldest newspaper, Cumhuriyet.

Fix-it' asst bishop at Tas abuse inquiry

Amid troubling times for Tasmania's Anglican Diocese in November 1994, it was assistant bishop Ronald Francis Stone who played fix-it man. A boy had complained to police about sexual abuse by a priest, leaving Bishop Phillip Newell "physically as well as emotionally distressed".
In the years prior now-Bishop Stone said his superior had tried to manage allegations of abuse against priest Louis Daniels. "He appeared to me to be really struggling with what to do," Bishop Stone has told a royal commission hearing.

Film reflects our own dark past

“If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one.”   The words of clergy sexual abuse victims attorney, Mitch Garabedian, in the film Spotlight are as harrowing as they are true to Ballarat.
The film details a real-life Pulitzer winning investigation by the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, a group of five investigative journalists, who uncovered widespread sexual abuse of children by scores of the district’s clergy in 2002.
