I was shipped from England on the S S Ormonde with a group
of 28 British ‘orphan’ girls, arriving on January 19 1949, at Goodwood Orphanage. I was 15yrs old. We were told that
we would have a better life and we would be cared for in a loving and understanding way with
regard to our well-being in a strange country. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
On the day we arrived we were lined up and the considerable amount of money collected by the crew of the S S Ormonde and given to us was taken from us. We never saw that money again.
