Graham Richardson’s account of the abuse of indigenous
children made for harrowing reading and brought to mind the proverbial
wisdom of Solomon — where there is no vision, the people perish
(“Indigenous children deserve to be safe”, 19/2). It is always
distressing to read accounts of adults prepared to create life but then
take no further responsibility for it.
The dystopian rise of what are essentially fatherless societies among indigenous people is a social scar that affects all Australians. While it would be comforting to think that there is some sort of redemption around the corner for these maltreated Aboriginal sons and daughters, the reality is that leaders of all levels and political persuasions should set aside their personal agendas, move on from the Australia Day self-flagellating, and make a concerted effort to free subsequent generations from this weeping wound in our country.
