The recent charges filed against an Erie Catholic diocesan priest for child sexual abuse has a number of serious implications for current Bishop Lawrence Persico and former Bishop Donald W. Trautman. Bishop Persico appears to have acted in accordance with church policy, once credible information was brought to his attention and he immediately notified law enforcement authorities.
Bishop Trautman, on the other hand, was advised of sexual allegations against the same priest in 2010, according to the grand jury presentment in the Poulson case, and offered a defense of trying to contact the alleged victim. He said he didn’t get in contact and apparently filed an internal memo. All this flies in the face of diocesan policy promulgated by Trautman himself:
