I, like many Australians, am reeling from the news of George Pell's conviction. I attended St James Primary School in Brighton from 1986 to 1990. The parish priest was Father Ronald Dennis Pickering. It was only when my first child went through the process of reconciliation did I reflect that, as a seven-year-old, I had to confess a "sin" to a priest we now know was a paedophile. He was protected from prosecution and funded with money from the church, whilst evading charges in exile.
